“A smiling face, a thumping bass, for a loving race”…so decreed Soul
II Soul frontman Jazzie B back in the day.

With influences ranging from Chic to hip-hop to African music, Soul II
Soul’s debut album, Club Classics, Vol. 1 (titled Keep on Movin’ in the
U.S.), was among the most rewarding R&B releases of 1989. Soul II
Soul leader/producer/composer Jazzie B takes one risk after another —
all of which pay off. The group enjoyed major hits with the Chic-
influenced gems “Keep on Movin'” and “Back to Life” (both of which
feature the gifted Caron Wheeler), and equally superb are the African-
influenced reflections of “Dance” and “Holdin’ On,” the soulful grit and
intensity of “Feel Free,” and the hypnotic house music of “Happiness.”
Though Wheeler was Soul II Soul’s best-known singer and went on to
enjoy a career as a solo artist, Rose Windross and Do’Reen (both
expressive soul divas) also do their part to make Club Classics, Vol. 1
the artistic triumph that it is.

The Whatnauts – Help Is On The Way 12 inch (CD & Vinyl)   7 comments

The Whatnauts – Help Is On The Way 12 inch (CD & Vinyl)

The Whatnauts were a ’70s soul group from Baltimore who drew their inspiration from falsetto-led groups like the Dells, the Chi-Lites, and especially the Stylistics. They shared a similar smooth sound and romantic lyrics (with an occasional foray into social lyrics) and a lead falsetto that could crack safety glass. Whatnauts lead vocalist Billy Herndon isn’t quite as controlled as the singers in those bands; occasionally his voice takes flight and comes dangerously close to shredding speaker cones. “Help Is on the Way,” a dance track they cut in 1981, is a stand alone single that reached the Billboard Charts in 1982.

Loose Ends was still in peak form on the late-’80s Zagora. “Slow Down”
was an R&B chart topper and huge club smash, and they had two
other songs become moderate hits. Loose Ends had found the right
mix of teasing vocals, clever lyrical hooks, tight production, and good
arrangements that weren’t relentless in their backbeats, yet were also
groove-oriented enough for dancers.

By Armando M. Mesa Amazon.com

This is still a Loose Ends favorite release of mine ! Before hip hop or
the “new” hard hitting style of rap I had almost forgotten what it was
like to listen to a genuine R & B, adult contemp.jazz flavored, dance
group or album. Leave it to the Brits or the U.K. to really sound like
many of their American musical counterparts when it comes to good
old fashioned R&B/Soul sounds. Zagora opens with the Middle Eastern
sounding of Stay A Little While and then breaks into familiar mid-80’s
groove territory. Then, it goes for the slick and pulsating sassiness of
Slow Down. The soothing sultriness of Sweetest Pain and the sweet
balladry of You Can’t Stop The Rain make any listener appreciate true
vocal talent and musicianship from such a group.
The only other release, as the original trio of Loose Ends ,that would
come close to this album is entitled The Real Chuckeeboo from 1988
(no longer in print nor available as a c.d. import). If any true fan or
listener can spot this title at a used c.d. shop, two words of advice,
GRAB IT !

If I had’t taken my vacation in Seattle,WA in ’85,I would never have
known about this album until now. I grabbed this at a record store
there and couldn’t wait to get home to hear it. It was worth the wait!
Every song on the album is great in my opinion and I took giddy pride
in the fact that I was the only one in town ( as far as I knew ) that
owned it(to this day, I have never seen or heard it anywhere else).
There is an excellent variety of song styles on this album and the
arrangements are superb. My two favorite cuts are “You can’t stop
the rain” and the title track. They both have that melancholy “rainy
day” feel to them that I love. Overall, I love this album for all the
aforementioned reasons. It is to my pleasant surprise to see that it is
available now on C.D.

Stanley Turrentine & Milt Jackson – Cherry   Leave a comment

One of Stan’s greatest CTI sessions. Some of you will recognize “Sister Sanctified” sampled by KRS One on the cut “My Philosophy” from the BDP By All Means Necessary album released in ’88.

Stanley Turrentine had a very recognizable tenor sound that was edgy
without being thin. He could also deliver a full-bodied ballad sound when the
music called for it. All of this is in evidence in this collection. On top of that,
he’s matched up with one of the all-time great vibraphonists, Milt Jackson,
who was always the perfect partner for each of the jazz artists he teamed up
with on numerous recordings over the years. Along with nice backup from
Bob James (piano), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), and Billy
Cobham (drums), Turrentine and Jackson – who should have been given
equal billing on this album – deliver a memorable session.
Your appetite for the spirited and the bluesy will be satisfied by “Speedball,”
“The Revs,” “Sister Sanctified,” and “Introspective,” plus two soulful ballads,
“I Remember You,” and “Cherry.” The album is short by today’s standards at
just 38 minutes, but you’ll enjoy every one of the six tracks.

While it’s true that the first chapter in Gato Barbieri’s musical life — at
least on records — had been that of an explorer, from his vanguard
outings on ESP with Don Cherry and Dollar Brand to his showcasing the
music of his native Latin America on Impulse, Fania, and Flying
Dutchman as it intersected with modern jazz, it is the third chapter
that concerns this release. Barbieri became deeply interested in
commercial music and its possibilities for Latin jazz and the funk and
salsa scenes in the early and mid-’70s. Caliente!, recorded with a very
large group, was his first step in that direction in 1976 and it was a
smash hit. Jazz purists may have decried its slick production and its
lack of ensemble improvisation, but the set was generally well received.
Ruby, Ruby followed suit in early 1978, and then Tropico popped out
only three months later. This set features another large group with no
less than three arrangers and a slew of different percussionists and
backing vocalists on virtually every track. Carlos Santana makes an
appearance on “Latin Lady,” one of the best cuts on the set, and the
Santana band’s percussionist, José Chepitó Areas, is here, as well as
Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, Armando Peraza, and funkmaster Bill
Summers to name a few. Another beauty is the lushly orchestrated
ballad “She Is Michelle,” (written for his wife). Production by David
Rubison is over the top. There are swells of strings, overdubs galore,
and a full-on chorus to add atmosphere on cuts such as the reading of
Caetano Veloso’s “Odara.” The cover of “Where Is the Love” is also a
bit indulgent — even for Gato at this stage, but it was aimed at scoring
in the charts, and it did. Throughout, Barbieri’s harsh, emotive tone is
soaring over the top in virtually every arrangement, and it is that
playing that drew listeners to this meld of funk, jazz, Latin, and Afro
Cuban rhythms, disco and pop. The final track, a Barbieri reading of
Ravel’s “Bolero,” with Eddie Watkins’ bass pumping it along in triple
time, has to be heard to be believed — Barbieri transforms it into a
carnival tune that loses none of its drama and pathos.

The Whispers scored big with the number two Billboard R&B hit “It’s a Love
Thing.” The rapidly paced single, seasoned with all the intangibles of a dance
anthem, found a welcome mat on the pop charts as well, peaking at number
28. The second and only other single to chart was “I Can Make It Better.”
Co-written by two members from Lakeside, this dance cut showcases Walt
and Scotty urgently delivering sympathetic lyrics supported by a funky
groove. It only managed to hold on at number 40 after ten weeks. This album
retains three splendid ballads (“Say You,” “Girl I Need You,” and “Fantasy”)
that never showed themselves on the charts. “Imagination,” like the rest of
this album, presses on in that uptempo vein with one appealing groove after
another.

The Trammps had a few modest hits on Buddah: “Zing Went the
Strings of My Heart,” which featured Earl Young’s seasoned bass voice
on lead; “Penquin at the Big Apple”; and a disco version of the
Dominoes’ erotic “Sixty Minute Man.”When their contract ended,
Young, Ron Baker, and Norman Harris left to form Golden Fleece
Records, the Trammps’ new home. After a few singles on Golden
Fleece, which were not as good as the stuff here, Buddah brought in
hired gun, disco mix master Tom Moulton to redo the Trammps’
singles and unreleased songs that resulted in The Legendary Zing
Album. The best of the rest include “Hold Back the Night,” “Scrub
Board” (an instrumental), and “Pray All You Sinners.”
