Bouncing between tracks that take great liberties and ones that simply
update and stretch the originals, Life Is a Dance (The Remix Project) is a
respectful and joyous celebration of Chaka Khan’s solo output. The big hits
are treated well, with Paul Simpson’s softening of the rough edges in “I Feel
for You” making it more of a rolling groove, while Marley Marl presents a
minimal house take on “This Is My Night.” Richard Tee’s glistening piano is
pumped way up on Dancin’ Danny D’s mix of “I’m Every Woman,” and the lone
Rufus track, “Ain’t Nobody,” gets a slight update by Frankie Knuckles. The
album’s highlight, “I Know You, I Live You,” is extended to nearly eight
minutes by Tony Humphries, giving the shimmering disco groove plenty of
deserved room. The sleepers are where Life Is a Dance really shines. Hank
Shocklee takes the slinky duet with Rick James on “Slow Dancin'” and adds
that clunky drum sound that made him famous, while “Clouds” presents one
of the final true house mixes from Clivillés & Cole before going pop and
pedestrian with C+C Music Factory. Perhaps a sign of the times, none of the
remixers get credited on the outside of the disc and a glossary of terms such
as “house” and “def” is included. A few of the tracks sounded dated a couple
years after the album’s release, but overall the collection shows more
restraint and good taste than expected.

When speaking to someone with zero to limited technical knowledge of
mixing, it’s almost impossible to convey exactly what Tom Moulton did
to the originals he was given. One could say he made them glow,
sprout wings, or — to be less precious about it — surpass their
potential. If you were to compare the originals to his mixes, which
were signified on the labels as “A Tom Moulton Mix,” you might gain a
better understanding, though you still wouldn’t fully understand
Moulton’s process, let alone his instincts, intuition, and imagination —
especially when he made sure not to leave too many fingerprints. His
mix might seem more expansive, more propulsive, more elegant. It
might only seem longer. The good thing is that none of that really
matters. Whether delivered in lavish, winding epics or succinct, radio-
friendly bursts, the selections on this double-disc add up to one of the
finest disco compilations, and it just so happens that it was put
together to honor the work of a pioneer who played as much of a role
in the development of dance music as any songwriter, producer,
session musician, vocalist, or DJ. Released between the early ’70s and
the early ’80s, the material is rather broad, even though each one of
the tracks is clearly geared for the dancefloor. There’s the supreme
anthem, MFSB’s “Love Is the Message”: its radio edit is well short of
three minutes, but the Moulton mix lasts nearly 12 minutes, allowing
for an extended intro and lengthy breaks that seem increasingly
relaxed and regal with each successive listen. A previously unreleased
mix of Eddie Kendricks’ “Keep on Truckin'” could have plateaued and
faded out after a couple minutes, but it keeps giving, building and
building in intensity until dropping into a dazzling all-percussion break.
It’ll be completely fresh to anyone familiar with the previously released
mixes. All other edits and versions of Patti Jo’s “Make Me Believe in
You,” originally written and recorded by Curtis Mayfield, plod when
compared to the one here. Even Andrea True Connection’s “More,
More, More,” one of the most overplayed and wrenched-of-value
disco singles, seems like a pure thing of beauty in this context. Several
endlessly enjoyable, successive volumes could be put together; across
a few decades, Moulton has touched thousands of tracks. This set
offers a mere drop in a bucket, but the drop makes a splash like a
Barry White cannonball dive.

Setting the mood during a recording session is important because that
“vibe” is what will come across on the finished record. Recording for
Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover” was done at two in the morning with
Ross passing out shots of Remy Martin. Just like with the Jackson 5’s
“Never Can Say Goodbye,” producer Hal Davis overheard a demo of
the Pam Sawyer/Marilyn McLeod song while at the Los Angeles offices
of Motown Records. The musicians he used on the session included
some of the same ones he would use on Thelma Houston’s 1977
R&B/pop chart-topping cover of “Don’t Leave Me This Way”:
drummer James Gadson, bassist Henry Davis, guitarist Art Wright,
and Crusaders pianist Joe Sample. Davis found some resistance from
some of the musicians (who didn’t like the change from a cool, languid
groove into a brisk disco workout) and Ross herself who thought that
she was “above” doing disco. The intervention of Motown founder
Berry Gordy set the stage for Ross having her biggest hit since “Ain’t
No Mountain High Enough.” To bring the right mood even more to the
fore, Davis instructed engineer Russ Terrana (who would later remix
Ross’ Chic-produced hits “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out” from
her platinum Diana LP) to install a strobe light so that Ross could be in
the “disco” mindset. It did the trick with “Love Hangover” going to
number one R&B and number one pop for two weeks in spring 1976.
The 5th Dimension lost the cover battle with their version issued as an
ABC single peaking at number 39 R&B and number 80 pop around the
same time. Ross’ “Love Hangover” enjoyed many remixes over the
years including one by Frankie Knuckles found on Diana Extended: The
Remixes.
