Both creatively and commercially, Radiant was a major step forward
for Atlantic Starr — and the person they can thank is James
Carmichael. This 1981 release was the first album that Carmichael
produced for the band, whose two previous LPs (Atlantic Starr in 1978
and Straight to the Point in 1979) were decent but not great. Atlantic
Starr needed to get to the next level, and Carmichael obviously gave
the White Plains, NY, combo the sort of guidance, direction, and
constructive criticism it needed to make the transition from decent to
excellent. Radiant gets off to an impressive start with the haunting
single “When Love Calls,” and the material that follows is equally
strong. That is true whether Atlantic Starr is getting into sentimental
soul ballads (“Am I Dreaming,” “Send for Me”) or tough, gritty funk
(“Think About That,” “Under Pressure”). One of the band’s greatest
assets on this LP is lead singer Sharon Bryant; Carmichael brings out
the best in her, and she really soars on “When Love Calls,” as well as
“My Turn Now” and the hit “Am I Dreaming” (a male/female duet with
fellow lead singer David Lewis). But Bryant isn’t the only lead vocalist
who excels on this record. David and Wayne Lewis are also fine
singers; “Send for Me,” in fact, boasts one of Wayne’s most
memorable performances. And once again, Carmichael deserves much
of the credit — he pushed the Lewis Brothers to excel just as he
pushed Bryant to excel. With Carmichael’s help, Radiant went down in
history as one Atlantic Starr’s finest and most essential albums.

Although Michael Henderson was best known for romantic ballads and
smooth quiet storm grooves in the mid- to late ’70s, his biggest hit
was the quirky funk smoker “Wide Receiver.” When this 1980 gem
soared to number four on the R&B singles charts and Buddah followed
it up with another funk single, “Prove It” (Henderson’s cynical
commentary on the entertainment business), the R&B press acted like
he had suddenly turned into George Clinton or Bootsy Collins. But in
fact, the singer/bassist had always been capable of providing wicked
funk grooves; anyone who had heard “Whip It” (not to be confused
with the Devo hit) and “I Can’t Help It” on 1977’s Goin’ Places, or
“Happy” on 1978’s In The Night Time could attest to that. The truth
is that Wide Receiver isn’t much different from Henderson’s previous
releases, with its hardcore funk jams taking up one-third of the album
at best, and romantic ballads, slow jams, and quiet storm material
dominating the self-produced Wide Receiver just as they had
dominated In The Night Time, Solid, Goin’ Places, and Do It All. It’s
just that this time, Buddah chose to give the funk tunes the most
promotion; nonetheless, the quiet storm formats that favored smooth
album tracks like “Reach Out for Me” and Henderson’s cover of the
Four Tops’ “Ask the Lonely” knew that he hadn’t abandoned them.
Even though Wide Receiver contained Henderson’s biggest hit, it
wasn’t his best-selling album; that honor goes to 1978’s gold In The
Night Time. But Wide Receiver sold respectably, and it was a valuable
addition to his catalog.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s artistic and commercial winning streak continued with its
ninth album, All ‘N All, the diverse jewel that spawned major hits like
“Serpentine Fire” and the dreamy “Fantasy.” Whether the visionary soul men
are tearing into the hardest of funk on “Jupiter” or the most sentimental of
ballads on “I’ll Write a Song for You” (which boasts one of Philip Bailey’s many
soaring, five-star performances), All ‘N All was a highly rewarding addition to
EWF’s catalog. Because EWF had such a clean-cut image and fared so well
among pop audiences, some may have forgotten just how sweaty its funk
could be. But “Jupiter” — like “Mighty, Mighty,” “Shining Star,” and “Getaway”
— underscores the fact that EWF delivered some of the most intense and
gutsy funk of the 1970s.

Boston isn’t the first city you think of when northern soul comes to
mind. While Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit were considered R&B
meccas in the ’60s and ’70s, Boston had a reputation for being more
of a rock town; after all, it was Boston that gave listeners Aerosmith,
the J. Geils Band, the Inmates, the Cars, and the band Boston. But
occasionally, the Boston area gave listeners some major R&B acts.
New Edition is a perfect example, and before that, Boston’s biggest
R&B group was Tavares. Those who labeled Tavares a disco act
because of “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel” and “More Than a
Woman” had a limited knowledge of the quintet. Tavares was a soul
group first and foremost, and it was only from 1976-1978 that the
Bostonians recorded a lot of disco. Tavares abandoned disco with
1979’s Madame Butterfly and continued to stay away from it on
1980’s Supercharged, which found the siblings working with three
different producers: David Foster, Benjamin Wright, and Bobby
Columby. This respectable, if uneven, effort contains a few gems,
including the sociopolitical “Bad Times” (a number ten R&B hit) and the
Stylistics-influenced “I Just Can’t Go on Living Without You.” Most of
the other material, however, is merely adequate. While Philadelphia
producer Bobby Martin made Madame Butterfly triumphant,
Supercharged isn’t as focused or as consistent. But even a second-
rate Tavares album is worth owning. And although Supercharged isn’t
perfect, it has more plusses than minuses.

After years of this album being out of print and an extended delay in
its reissue, funky town grooves has finally blessed us with Bionic
Boogie- the official debut of Gregg Diamond’s disco oriented projects in
the late 70’s. Categorizing Gregg Diamond’s music can be as mind
boggling as it sounds on record. While many of the formulaic disco
arrangements that were typical of a late 70’s record were prevalent in
his releases (Strings, synths, funky guitar licks, deep bouncing
basslines), Gregg attacks the dancefloor with an audio ferocity that’s
only matched by Patrick Adams and Larry Levan at their peak. This is
emphasized by his use of loopy breaks, melodies, and big arena rock
styled hooks that are made for the 12 and 1AM crowd at nightclubs.
While the sonic delivery is raw, it has the clean and concise execution
of Giorgio Moroder and the top flight musicality of Salsoul at its best-
yet Gregg Diamond’s sound is totally original.

The whole album is fair game but “Dance Little Dreamer” and “Risky
Changes” are the key cuts on this album. “Risky Changes” in particular
is probably the dance record that Rod Stewart and KISS wished they
would’ve made when they were attempting to get a piece of this
market. If you strip away the disco arrangements and add guitars and
drums, it could a pop rock record. The song itself is marvelous as it
got the high energy to throw one into mind warped frenzy on the
dance floor. Dance little Dreamer has a warm feel of a intergalactic
adventure with its floating piano loop and easy going hook. “Don’t lose
that Number” and “We Must Believe in Magic” continues in that same
vein. Even if the latter record kind of comes off as sounding like theme
music for a 70’s amusement park, all of the crucial elements that
makes Gregg diamond’s tracks addictive is still prevalent. While the last
two tracks on the original album sound basic compared to the others
(“Feel like Dancing” and “Big West”) they’re still solid.

Also noteworthy are the short but informative liner notes by Brian Chin-
which puts Gregg Diamond’s sound into perspective, the stellar
remastering job from Tom Moulton himself straight from the original
master tapes, and the 12″versions of “Dance little Dreamer” and Risky
Changes included as bonus tracks. This reissue is perfect in every
way. Grab this while you can get a hold of it because there’s no telling
when this will go out of print (also grab Hot butterfly which was also
reissued by funky town grooves). To the people at funky town
grooves, keep up the good work. Now that this and Hot Butterfly have
been released, bring on Starcruiser and Hardware.

From Brian Chin’s Liner Notes

With enthusiasm running high after the club success of his 1977
concept album Bionic Boogie, Diamond instantly forgot the just-
completed album (as he always did) and began writing for the next.
For the second Bionic Boogie project, Hot Butterfly, he fashioned a
truly unique fusion of funk, romanticism and street-verite. In “Chains”
and “Cream (Always Rises to the Top),” especially, Diamond’s East
and West Village roots were clearly showing. Diamond later called these
compositions a “PG” version of what his imagination actually held, but,
to be real, any number of New York bands of the time, whether
glittery, glammy or punkish, would have wished they could deliver this
level of gritty urban flash. As for the songs’ tone of surrealistic sleaze,
you can just forget about competition. There was none. And to think
that these lyrics were delivered with romance and gospel warmth in the
matchless lead and assembled voices of Luther Vandross, Cissy
Houston and David Lasley!

Vandross and Diamond met at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studio,
where Luther, just tagging along with friends Robin Clark and Carlos
Alomar hired on David Bowie’s Young Americans sessions, was
overheard by Bowie improvising the “I heard the news today, oh boy”
lick in the chorus of the title song, and found himself pulled right into
the vocal booth. Teaming with Gregg as an unsigned featured vocalist,
after two unsuccessful Cotillion albums, Luther was immediately cast in
his first true star appearance on record. His suave, assured and fully
evolved presence on “Hot Butterfly” not only calls to mind the Marvin
Gaye and Spinners records that echo in the production, but, more
appropriately, recalls the deep impressions left by accomplished actors
cast in unconventional roles under the scripting and direction of
innovative young lions: say, Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, or Burt
Reynolds in Boogie Nights.

By Michael Kerner Amazon.com

These past years, we’ve heard so much from Lionel Richie on his own,
that is more from his daughter Nicole and her antics with Paris Hilton
on The Simple Life. But, on Lionel’s own, he has shown a lot more
promise as a artist on his own who has made quality music. While he
has shown that on stage, many hard core fans have anxiously
wondered if Lionel Richie will ever reunite with his old group The
Commodores. Well, word of mouth has came alive that Lionel is set to
reunite with the 70’s soul group for a tour for the first time in over
twenty-five years. But, the deal is seeing whether is groups’ classics
can be re-introduced to a generation that seems to be more
interested in who has to be hot today wannabes like Britney Spears
and Beyonce’. This collection can answer those questions well.

The 2008 Commodores Gold, is the groups’ latest hits collection that
does a great job at bringing back the brick houses to a whole new era.
The double album does a great job at not just bringing Lionel Richie’s
work as lead into play, but brings their best from the 70’s and 80’s,
without any of their hits that’ve been overlooked from previous hits
collections like the 2005 Lionel Richie & The Commodores Gold, or the
20th Century Remasters: Millennium Collection. Here you get not just
the classics like Zoom, and Easy which have been fantastic
Commodores staples, as well as Brick House and Three Times A Lady,
but you also get a lot of Commodores greats’ that have not seen the
light of day in years including Old-Fashion Love, their only major post-
Lionel hit Nightshift, and Jesus Is Love. Each song is restored and
remastered very well, and brings back all the great feelings of Funk,
R&B and classic Soul to your knees when you hear every track on this
album.

This past year has sadly shown that there haven’t been many
greatest hits albums that have delivered as must buys, but The
Commodores Gold has been an absolute surprise to my ears, and is a
great buy for anyone who has not even heard a brick house as
mighty, mighty as this one. I really recommend this as a delightful
addition to your music collection.

Natalie Cole – This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) (Remix)   4 comments

From songfacts.com

Natalie Cole’s first single, this funky pop song made a statement that she was not going to be a ballad singer like her famous father, Nat King Cole, who died when she was 15. Natalie worked hard to stay out of her father’s shadow, and didn’t start singing seriously until her senior year at the University of Massachusetts. After graduating in 1972 with a degree in child psychology, she started singing at small venues and met the producers Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy in 1974. Jackson and Yancy were in the group The Independents, which had broken up. They recorded Cole at Curtis Mayfield’s studio in Chicago, writing and producing all the songs that would get her a record deal with Capitol (also her dad’s label) and become the Inseparable album.
There is no magical meaning behind this song – according to Chuck Jackson, he and Yancy wrote it after Larkin Arnold at Capitol said he didn’t hear a hit single on the album. Jackson and Yancy went back to their hotel and wrote the song that night, providing Cole’s big hit.

This was the first of five consecutive #1 R&B hits for Natalie Cole. She was extremely successful in the late ’70s, but also developed a drug addiction that derailed her career and almost killed her. She got sober in the mid-’80s and launched a comeback that peaked with her 1991 album Unforgettable… with Love, where she sang many of her father’s hits.

This won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. It was the first time someone other than Aretha Franklin won the award, which was first given in 1968. Cole drew many favorable comparisons to Franklin when her first album was released.

Younger listeners may know this song from the long-running eHarmony commercials where it is used to suggest that using the service will bring forth a love that will last a lifetime.

The 1967 song “Everlasting Love” probably convinced the record company and publisher to use the rather bland title “This Will Be” for this song, as back then it was a bad idea to use the same title as a song that was already a hit, since your song’s royalties were sure to be incorrectly attributed to the more famous one. Over time, the song started appearing as the far more descriptive “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love).”

The Mizell Brothers (Larry and Fonce) put L.T.D. on the right track,
after the self-contained unit had stagnated on two subpar albums.
Jeffery Osborne sang lead, and the Mizells spotlighted the North
Carolinian’s powerful tenor. This album spawned the endearing,
sentimental “Love Ballad,” a majestic piece that Osborne crushes.
L.T.D.’s Southern roots emerge on “Let the Music Keep Playing,” a
Southern-dipped tearjerker. The jazzy, joyous title track, “Love to the
World,” has a powerful message and gets a reprise as “Love to the
World Prayer.” Seven well-crafted tunes that never embarrass or
make you want to skip to the next, originally released in 1976.

Producer Bobby Martin once said of L.T.D. that “they play well, they
write well, their vocals are moving, and they have a special energy.”
He couldn’t have been more correct. What they’d begun with their
delicious mix of classic funk and heart-wrenching soul on 1976’s
breakthrough Love to the World LP, they furthered just a year later on
Something to Love. Their sonic dexterity was well-appreciated, as the
album shot to number one on the charts. L.T.D. again included a little
something for everyone across this fantastic, elastic set. The opening
“Age of the Showdown” is an eclectic and completely cohesive mix of
funky bass and intricate guitar loops, dance rhythms and pop ethic,
married to Jeffrey Osborne’s remarkable vocals, which themselves
swing from blistering funk inflections to bluesy call outs and on to sweet
R&B breaks without missing a beat. Elsewhere, the chart-topping
“(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again” is a sweet slab of
funk given a run for its money by “Material Things,” which revolves
around John T. McGhee’s outstanding basslines, while “We Party
Hearty” weighs in with vibrant horns. And, of course, Something to
Love wouldn’t be worth its salt without a gorgeous Osborne ballad,
captured here on “(Won’t Cha) Stay With Me.” The album stumbles
only on “You Come First at Last” and “Make Someone Smile, Today!,”
as organist Billy Osborne steps behind the mike to handle the vocals.
He’s got a good voice, to be sure, but when slivered next to his
brother Jeffrey, it’s quickly apparent why he’s the lead vocalist here.
And despite that one glitch, this is still an outstanding effort and
smooth blend, no matter how you cut it. Something to Love would
mark some of L.T.D.’s last great funk material as they began to swing
slowly into the waters of mellow R&B.

Togetherness is one of L.T.D.’s strongest albums, boasting the hit
singles “Holding On (When Love Is Gone)” and “We Both Deserve
Each Other’s Love,” as well as such solid album cuts as “Concentrate
on You.” There are a couple of bland moments on the record, but
song for song it is among the group’s finest records and contains
some wonderful vocals from Jeffrey Osborne.

This nine-member R&B band’s debut album release for Tabu features some
upbeat, dance-oriented numbers. The energetic, soulful vocals of Belita
Woods stand supreme. The two single releases were the socially uplifting
“Wake Up and Be Somebody” and the incessantly groovin’ “Lovin’ Is Really My
Game.” The former has some Latin undertones on top of atypical R&B
rhythms, and the latter is more disco-seasoned. The vocal prowess of Woods
is admirable as she unleashes the lyric with her urgent vocal appeal. The
expedient numbers clipped the R&B charts at number 48 and number 14,
respectively. The irony of this project is that the most popular song on it was
never released. “This Must Be Heaven” is a highly sought-after composition,
as is this album. Set in a romantic, utopian mood, the ballad gracefully builds
to a jovial climax. This song is a quiet storm classic.

A wonderful treasure from the early 80s soul scene – the first album
from Champaign, and an instant winner right from the start! The
group may not have been one of the bigger names of their time, but
they really won a lot of favor with soul listeners over the years – and
this album’s one that turns up often in collections of top-shelf soul from
the period – no surprise, given the classy, careful production – and the
mix of jazzy riffing, tight rhythms, and well-crafted vocals – almost
enough to put Champaign at the level of Earth Wind & Fire! The sound
is just right – very soulful, with less of the too-commercial modes of
some of their contemporaries – and titles include “Party People”,
“Whiplash”, “I’m On Fire”, “How Bout Us”, “Can You Find The Time”,
“Dancin Together Again”, “If One More Morning”, and “Lighten Up”.

The introductory album for the DeBarge family. Their older brothers,
Bobby and Tommy, had helped them land a deal with Motown through
their connection playing with Switch. Although they sang tentatively on
several songs and hadn’t really meshed, they displayed enough
potential to alert both the company and the urban contemporary/R&B
audience that an interesting new group was on the scene

The second album from the Grand Rapids, Michigan natives DeBarge featured
three singles, the first of which (“Stop! Don’t Tease Me”) showcases El on
lead; the song peaked at Number 46 after a short eight weeks. The follow-up
was “I Like It,” a very danceable yet laid-back number in which Randy carries
the initial verse, and El brings up the rear. With impeccable penmanship and
arrangement, it clocked in at Number Two on the R&B charts, and became
the group’s first pop Top 40 entry. The follow-up single was the title track,
“All This Love.” Solely led by El’s convincing tenor, this composition, in its
traditional arrangement, sails along like the winds of a cool summer night. The
longevity of this number can be heard in every note, including a melodious
acoustic guitar solo. The remaining songs fall closely behind the
aforementioned numbers.

by Jason Elias AllMusic

After the release of 1982’s All This Love, the group became one of the most
popular and talented acts in music. While that effort was a likeable though
uneven affair, In A Special Way was, in short, a classic. This boasts a
minimalist and artful sound, and rumor has it that the horn tracks were lost
during the recording. So as a result In A Special Way is one of the most spare
and effective albums of the ’80s. The first track, the synth based “Be My
Lady,” and the bittersweet and pragmatic “Need Somebody,” both feature
lead vocals from James DeBarge. In A Special Way also marked the coming of
age of the vocally gifted El DeBarge as a producer and writer. The biggest hit
here, the poignant and spare “Time Will Reveal,” is perfect, from its beautiful
arrangement and flawless backing vocals to El DeBarge’s amazing lead. His
prowess also makes the potentially overdone sentiments of “Love Me In A
Special Way” come off instead as romantic and effective. The last track, “A
Dream,” was written and sung by Bunny DeBarge. With a great melody line,
the song accurately attains a sense of longing as Bunny DeBarge’s lead is
particularly moving. Although R&B and rap have appropriated segments of
this album in every conceivable manner, the greatness begins and ends with
this album.

This marked the third album by the Grand Rapids, MI. natives, and it was also
an attempt by the label to increase the group’s pop appeal. Of the album’s
four releases, two were Top Ten singles on the Billboard pop charts: “Rhythm
of the Night
” (Number Three), and “Who’s Holding Donna Now” (Number Six).
The former, which is featured in the Berry Gordy movie The Last Dragon,
conveys a grande fiesta ambience with its Caribbean rhythm. The single
stayed on the Billboard R&B charts for 23 weeks, peaking at Number One.
The latter is a mid-tempo number that stays nestled in its mellow pulse,
kindled by El DeBarge’s inquisitive vocals. The single held the Number Two
spot on the charts for four consecutive weeks. While most of the album is
pop-oriented, “You Wear It Wear” houses a soulful beat fueled by El’s
expedient delivery. With its catchy hook line and its female-commending
lyrics, the single peaked at Number Seven. “The Heart Is Not so Smart” is
clearly a pop tune, and it is no challenge to El’s vocal talent; nonetheless, the
single peaked at Number 39 after 14 weeks. The beautifully written
composition, “Share My World,” was never a release (although it was
featured on the group’s self-titled debut album). However, it has a soft,
gentle air with much crossover appeal, and features El and Bunny DeBarge
on lead. Though Bunny’s vocals are plausible, El’s reign supreme. Aside from
the aforementioned, the other selections are marginal.

Carl Carlton was the singer’s sole gold LP and included his sole gold
single, “She’s a Bad Mama Jama.” Produced by Leon Heywood, it
includes the steppers favorite “Your Love’s Rated X-Tra,” ” Don’t You
Wanna Make Love” (which sounds like Rick James’ “You & I”), and
the ballad “I Think It’s Gonna Be Alright.” The album highlights
Carlton’s vocal growth. [“She’s a Bad Mama Jama” can be found on

From Dusty Groove

One of the greatest east coast vocal group albums from the seventies, and
still a sought-after classic! The band’s an East Coast sweet soul vocal group,
with a deep soul feel and some heartbreaking vocals that hit the upper
reaches of the harmony style – and they’ve got a super-dope look and style
that puts them in the company of groups like Soul Generation, True
Reflection, and Natural Four. Norman Harris, Vince Montana, and Bobby Eli all
had a hand in this, so you know the production is right, and the sound is large
with a sweet Philly mix of moods. Titles include “It’s Rough Out Here“, “I
Found Love At Last”, “Those Were The Best Days Of My Life”, and “I’ll Always
Love You.”

The Last Soul Company: Malaco, A Thirty Year Retrospective   6 comments

For Michael. Great Request!

The Last Soul Company: Malaco, A Thirty Year Retrospective [Box set]

by Alex Henderson AllMusic

When Malaco Records started out in the late 1960s, the label that small Southern R&B companies looked up to was Stax. The Jackson, MS-based Malaco, like the Memphis-based Stax, focused mainly on deep-fried Southern soul in the beginning — only in 1968 and 1969, Malaco was a struggling young operation that was fighting to stay afloat. But ironically, Malaco would still be in business long after Stax’s 1975 demise, and it would continue to favor classic soul long after most labels had moved away from it. When other black-oriented independents were putting out urban contemporary, rap and house music in the 1980s and 1990s, Malaco was the place you went to hear soulsters like Johnnie Taylor, Denise LaSalle and Latimore and soul-minded bluesmen like Little Milton and Bobby “Blue” Bland. In 1999, Malaco celebrated its 30 years in business with The Last Soul Company, a six-CD box set that spans 1968-1998 and ranges from the decent to the superb. It’s miraculous that the company survived long enough to have a 30th anniversary — small R&B labels have come and gone over the years, and Malaco itself almost went under at various times. This collection contains all of the hits that defined Malaco, including King Floyd’s “Groove Me” in 1970, Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff” in 1971, Dorothy Moore’s “Misty Blue” in 1976 and Z.Z. Hill’s “Down Home Blues” in 1982. Over the years, Malaco Records and the Malaco studio dabbled in disco (one of this collection’s most famous tunes is Anita Ward’s 1979 disco smash “Ring My Bell”), funk and urban contemporary, but essentially, Malaco has remained a soul label with an interest in blues and gospel. Half the fun of hearing a collection like this one is discovering some obscure gems — on The Last Soul Company, such gems include Jewell Bass’ seductive “Let Your Love Rain Down on Me,” Power’s remake of the Rascals’ “Groovin’,” and male singer Ona Watson’s soul makeover of Johnny Paycheck’s “Take This Job and Shove It.” Obviously, a six-CD set is too much for the casual listener, but for the seasoned R&B fanatic, The Last Soul Company is a fascinating listen.

By David Meeker Amazon.com

This was an incredible find. Amazing, hard-to-find soul music that comes excellently packaged with beautifully-written and enlightening liner notes–a small book, actually–written by Rob Bowman (author of Soulville U.S.A.: The Story of Stax Records). Wonderfully done. I was simply just blown away, song after song, at the power of these songs, the arrangements, etc. Just one example: the Mississippi Fred McDowell track “Red Cross Store” on the first CD (there are 6 CDs, by the way), has to be one of the great blues-rock tracks of all time, in my humble opinion. I had to play it over and over. It makes your hair stand on end. I’m a big fan of McDowell and have most of his early 60’s records on Arhoolie, so this was a major find. All of it, though, is top-notch, and as I mentioned well-documented with the accompanying booklet inside. I couldn’t recommend this box set more. Your big loss if you don’t check it out…

joe thomas is aflutist, also a saxophonist, equivalent to Grover
Washington jr. he is incredible,a genius in disguise.I’M FAMILIAR
WITH HIS VERY BEST WORK which includes plato”s retreat. masada
is a masterpiece, incomparible to the average jazz you hear everyday.
This particular composition reminds me of arabic/latin. It”s great
work.I”ve beeblooing for this on cd 20 plus years. Finally my day has
arrived.

I was expecting much more from an album with a title called Masada.

To me, this is mix of big band disco, a touch of funk and perhaps a shot of
jazz. Even though some mifght call this “Fusion”, it definitely ain’t my idea of
what Fusion means. It’s Joe blowing his horn in spots with heavy strings and
blaring horns backing him up. Most certainly cuts like “Poinciana”, “Gemini
Flyin’ High” & the title cut would not have been out of place in some 70s’
disco palaces. “Let’s Love” is a slow groover which Ohio Player fans will
find familiar. A taste of Soul-Funk can be found in “I’m Gone And I’m Glad” but
it’s nothing to get excited over. At best this is an average album in all the
places that really matter. Whoever dared to make a comparison between this cat
Thomas and Grover must’ve had a problem with his hearing aid. Mr. Washington
has nothing to worry about from Mr. Thomas, at least not from anything on this
album; and believe me, I’m not trying to be cruel.

Curtis Mayfield hit a stride during the ’70s that was unparalleled among
R&B/soul performers from an album standpoint. He was writing,
producing, arranging, and performing on great album after great
album, then distributing them on his own label as well. This one
included the big hit “Kung Fu,” plus the title song, and once more
perfectly blended rigorous message tracks and steamy love songs.

From DustyGroove

A wonderfully wicked album from Curtis Mayfield – one that’s not
nearly as famous as his Superfly set, but which is every bit as great!
The groove here is lean, mean, and totally righteous – a bit more
stripped-down than some of the rumbling funk of other Curtom
efforts, and served up with a fluid groove that makes the album a killer
from start to finish! As with Superfly, there’s a nice blend here between
uptight funky tracks and some more laidback soul – showcasing both
sides of the Curtis Mayfield sound of the 70s – the brash society-
changing soul, and the mellower, more fragile voice that first came to
prominence in The Impressions. Titles alone tell you the vibe of the
record – and they include “Ain’t Got Time”, “To Be Invisible”, “Kung
Fu”, “Suffer”, “Power to the People”, and “Make Me Believe In You”.

Fatback maintained the same high standard of quality to produce another
impressive slab of funk-tinged disco. XII is notable to hip-hop historians for
the track “King Tim III (Personality Jock),” a song often tagged as the first
rap song (it was released as a single shortly before the more popular
“Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang). “King Tim” remains a killer blast of
hip-hop, seamlessly mixing a slick old-school rap into the band’s intensely
funky blend of organ, energetic horn blasts, and a relentless walking
bassline. However, this isn’t all there is to XII: The album’s other tracks
present a consistent mix of funky grit and disco slickness. Standout tracks
include “Gimme That Sweet, Sweet Lovin’,” which layers a Bee Gees-style
falsetto vocal with an addictive mid-tempo groove anchored by a synthesizer
bass, and “Disco Bass,” which blends a catchy chant-along chorus with the
serpentine hook mentioned in the title. XII is also notable for the high quality
of its sound, which filters the energy of their sound through a carefully
crafted soundscape that brings out all the details of their sound: a good
example is how the huge drum sounds that propel “You’re My Candy Sweet”
seem to leap out of the speakers. The only track that tends toward the filler
that has marred past Fatback albums is “Disco Queen,” but even it is
redeemed by its punchy horn arrangement and some catchy background
vocals. All in all, XII is one of Fatback’s finest albums and a treat for anyone
who likes their disco music especially funky.

Fired Up ‘N’ Kickin’ is divided into two segments, the Freak Party and Foot
Stompin’ sides. Foot Stompers first: you won’t find a better girl-watching song
then “I Like the Girls,” a funky anthem driven by an incessant bass riff; some
timely rim drumming and cowbells embellish the beat along with well-placed
horn riffs. “Snake” has a Latin beat and relies heavily on salsa horns; it’s pure
jazz and shows Fatback’s versatility, adding some tasty solos for seasoning.
The side concludes with “Can’t You See,” a laid-back tune, so laid-back you
wonder why it’s on the Foot Stompin’ side. “I’m Fired Up” kicks off the Freak
Party side; the vocals are muddy and the words (the few there are) are hard
to distinguish, but so what? Fatback is about the beat, the rhythms, and the
musicianship. “Boogie Freak” has a more infectious beat and the lyrics are
more interesting than “Fired,” though they ripped the girlish backing vocals
from the Ohio Players. The weakest tune on the album is “Get Out On the
Dance Floor”; it has too many changes, weak lyrics, and uninspired vocals.
“At Last” (yes, the old standard) concludes the Freak side. The classic is done
in straight-ahead lounge-club style; a better vocalist might have made
something of this, as the arrangement is superb, but the vocalist is adequate
at best. Like the Foot Stompin’ side, the Freak Side failed to live up to its
name.

The first album cut by Gladys Knight & the Pips for Buddah Records was a
watershed in their history. Co-produced by the group and Tony Camillo,
Imagination embodied all of what Gladys Knight & the Pips had learned in their
previous six years at Motown, watching the way their records were made,
combined with the maturity of the sound that they’d achieved in that time,
and virtually complete freedom to choose their repertory — a factor that they
were mature and sophisticated to exploit to the fullest. The result was four
hit songs, including the chart-topping “Midnight Train to Georgia” (originally
written as “Midnight Plane to Houston”) and one of the biggest selling albums
in their history — Imagination was sophisticated soul at its best, Knight belting
out numbers with great forcefulness and passion while the group provided
delicate backup. Among the surprising non-hits is the radiantly sung “Perfect
Love” and a beautiful harmonized cover of “I Can See Clearly Now,” featuring
the Pips singing lead. Reissued on CD by BMG Special Products in 1997 with
full annotation, and worth tracking down in any format.

The Claudine movie soundtrack sported the jammin’ million-selling single “On
and On” by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Written and produced by Curtis
Mayfield and featured in the classic 1974 family drama starring Diahann
Carroll, James Earl Jones, and Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (Welcome Back Kotter,
Alien Nation, Cooley High), it parked at number two R&B for four weeks,
going to number five Pop on Billboard’s charts in 1974. Claudine is the least
celebrated of songwriter/producer Mayfield’s soundtrack albums (Superfly,
Sparkle), though it’s the most poignant of them. “Mr. Welfare Man” lays out
the dehumanizing effect of being on welfare, while still being enticing and
majestic in its dynamic arrangement. As much airplay as the track garnered,
oddly it was never released as a single. “To Be Invisible” spoke to a child
character’s need to escape her depressing surroundings. Originally recorded
by Mayfield on his Curtis LP, “The Makings of You” is a heart-tugging,
strings-cushioned ballad that Knight sings wonderfully. Other LP tracks that
received airplay are the upbeat, beautiful title track and the sweet “Make
Yours a Happy Home,” which curiously wasn’t issued as a single until 1976.
Claudine went gold, hitting number one on the R&B charts in summer 1974. It
was reissued on CD by Capitol on June 8, 1999.

Following on the heels of their 1975 smash Spirit of the Boogie, Kool & the
Gang hit the road to tour the album and record new material. One tumultuous
show, at London’s Rainbow Theatre, became the core of Love &
Understanding. Three live tracks, “Hollywood Swinging,” “Summer Madness,”
and a dreamily mellow “Universal Sound,” are all excellent reminders of just
how good this band could sound when they found the vibe and had the funk
firmly in hand. But as good as this stuff is, there are ominous glimmers among
the goods, of musical moves the band were contemplating — heard most
markedly in the bland “Sugar” and “Do It Right Now.” For, despite the
sureness with which they were creating driving funk, they were also
struggling with the oncoming disco explosion. That push-pull was duly
reflected in the album. The studio tracks are the most uneven. At their best,
they are dominated by the opening title track and its near-instrumental twin
shadow “Come Together,” which closes. Both songs are horn heavy, an
insistent call for unity, love, and peace. The rest of the album is sandwiched
between this jazzy cacophony but, despite the rocky moments, Love and
Understanding remains a remarkable album, recorded at a time when the
band was still reveling in the grip of pure funk, uncorrupted by the
mainstream.

….from The Creative Source, who were discovered and managed by the
Fifth Dimension’s Ron Townsend. This has the classic cover of Bill Withers’
“Who Is He and What Is He To You” (at 11 and some odds minutes it was a
workout on the dancefloor)–(Dagummit)–and Bill Withers’ “Let Me In To Your
Life”. It also has the original “Can’t Hide Love” penned by Skip Scarsborough,
later done by EWF. And, it has the Carole King faux latin “Corazon”. They
were great vocalists, but alas, could not overcome the monster success of
“Who Is…” . They put out a few more less popular dance LPs and then faded
into oblivion…

“Magic Carpet Ride” is another cover that is worth checking out although for my
money it can’t touch the ‘funk’ of the Steppenwolf original. (DAP)

When Stephanie Mills enjoyed a major commercial breakthrough with her third
album, What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin’, the singer often found herself
being described as a disco diva — and it wasn’t a description that she agreed
with. Mills saw herself as primarily a romantic R&B traditionalist, not a disco
singer. If you asked her whether she had more in common with Gladys Knight
or Donna Summer, Mills would have said Gladys Knight without a moment’s
hesitation. Nonetheless, this superb LP (which was produced by the James
Mtume/Reggie Lucas team) does contain its share of dance-oriented
treasures; “Don’t Stop Dancin’,” “You Can Get Over,” and the hit “Put Your
Body in It” are disco funk classics that heated up numerous dancefloors in
1979. Mills is equally impressive on romantic ballads and slow jams like
“Deeper Inside Your Love,” “Starlight,” “You and I,” and Peabo Bryson’s “Feel
the Fire” — and in various interviews, she insisted that those songs were
more representative of her than the album’s dance-oriented material. At any
rate, What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin’ remains one of Mills’ strongest,
most essential albums.
