Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes’ first album without any involvement
from Teddy Pendergrass and Philadelphia International Records is
better than anticipated. David Ebbo sounds identical to Pendergrass
and delivers some spirited leads on the skimpy eight-song LP. Ebbo
excels on “Reaching For the World,” an uplifting, be-what-you-wanna-
be song that sounds like a Gamble & Huff production. He continues
the duet trend he started with Sharon Paige with the mellow “After You
Love Me Why Do You Leave Me.” Some of the songs are weak;
“Hostage Pt. 1 & 2,” for instance, doesn’t live up to its intriguing title.
Overall, though, this is a good first effort and proves that the Blue
Notes’ sound didn’t leave with Pendergrass.

From Dusty Groove

A really great post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The
Blue Notes – the group’s first after the departure of Teddy
Pendergrass, and a set that shows them hardly missing a beat! The
group are still recording at Sigma Sound, with Melvin at the production
helm – and they’ve also got that great balance between a deep-voiced
lead singer (new arrival David Ebo) and the soaring harmonies of the
rest of the group. Tunes are wonderfully written – the right mix of
personal and political from the group’s biggest years – and the album’s
got a really great sense of pace and timing overall, maybe even more
so than previous records. Titles include “Hostage”, “He Loves You And
I Do Too”, “Stay Together”, “Sandman”, “Big Singing Star”, and
“Reaching For The World”.

Harold trudges on, Teddy Pendergrass-less, on a lackluster effort. The Blue
Album only has six songs; one, “Tonight’s the
Night,” rambles on for over eight minutes. Gene McFadden and John
Whitehead contribute three of the six songs — not
their best, but “Your Love Is Taking Me on a Journey” isn’t half bad. Harold
puts some nice touches on “I Should Be Your
Lover,” a Gamble & Huff song originally recorded by the O’Jays. Harold added
some lyrics and monologue and gets co-writer
credits on the new version.
———————————————————————
“Prayin'” features David Ebo doing a terrific job singing lead. It turned out to
be a dance floor classic in clubs around the world.
“If You’re Looking For Someone To Love” has Sharon Paige out front in a nice
stepper. A more than decent album that
deserves a first look, then another just to be sure. (Dap – AJP)

A post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but
one that still keeps their groove very much intact – thanks to instrumental
help from Norman Harris, Ron Baker, Vince Montana, Earl Young, and a host
of other Sigma Sound talents! Although recorded in the early 80s, the set’s
actually got a stripped-down quality that really reminds us of the earliest
days of Philly International – kind of a back-to-basics approach that really
works well for The Blue Notes, at a time when so many other groups might
have been tempted to push off into clunkier territory. We might miss Teddy
Pendergrass a bit in the lead, but the vocals are still totally top-shelf – very
much in the best group soul mode of the time – and titles include “Hang On In
There”, “Come Go With Me”, “Ain’t That Love”, “Tell Me Why”, “I’m In Love
With You”, and “Have I Told You I Love You Today”.

From Dusty Groove

Gene Chandler’s one of those artists who never fails to surprise us –
and this wonderful package is a great illustration of one of the best
chapters in his career! Gene’s first known for his big early hits for Vee
Jay – including “Duke Of Earl” – and stayed strong over many many
years, shifting labels from time to time, continuing to grow as a singer
and move through a range of different styles all handled quite well.
This set offers an oft-lost side of Gene’s career – his later recordings
for Carl Davis’ Chi-Sound label, home to a number of older Chicago
soul artists who worked with Davis earlier at other labels. As with other
singers on the label – such as Walter Jackson – Gene here moves into
a smooth modern soul vein, mixing uptempo and midtempo tunes with
ease, showing a sophisticated vocal style that you’d hardly ever
expect from his earlier work! There’s some real gems on this set –
which features not only all three albums that Chandler recorded for the
label, but also 9 more bonus tracks from singles as well – a massive
31 track package that’s the first full look at this side of Gene’s career.
Titles include “Does She Have A Friend”, “That Funky Disco Rhythm”,
“I’m Attracted To You”, “For The Sake Of The Memories”, “God
Send”, “Almost Daylight”, “I Keep Coming Back”, “I’ll Make The Living
If You’ll Make The Living Worth While”, “Skate”, “Time Is A Thief”,
“Where Have You Been”, “Get Down (demo)”, “Let Me Make Love To
You (long version)”, “All About The Paper”, “Rainbow 80”, “You’ve
Been So Sweet To Me”, and “When You’re #1”.

A decent debut album that didn’t quite establish a musical idenity for
the group, despite the inclusion of the classic “I Heard it Through the
Grapevine” and the wonderful, definitive version of the title track.
(Mary Wells’ little-known original ranks a close second.) The big
drawback, however, is a bowdlerized (i.e. censored) version of “Take
Me in Your Arms and Love Me.” The editing not only severely
damages the song’s “story structure” (Berry Gordy had a firm belief
that a song should tell a story), it undermines the erotic awareness
Knight brings to the material. Thankfully, the restored version is found
on Anthology.

From DustyGroove

A great resurgence in the career of Gladys Knight – her debut for
Motown Records, and the beginning of a new wave of sophistication
and soul in her sound! The style here is much more polished than the
R&B-tinged feel of her earlier recordings – a warmly growing sound
that really set a new level for countless other soul acts in the 70s –
especially in the way that her lead vocals are given full support by The
Pips. Production is by Norman Whitfield, Johnny Bristol, and Harvey
Fuqua – who all give Gladys a wonderfully full set of backings – and
titles include her original recording of “Heard It Through The
Grapevine”, plus “Everybody Needs Love”, “Ain’t No Sun Since You’ve
Been Gone”, “Take Me In Your Arms and Love Me”, and “Do You
Love Me Just A Little Honey”.

by Jason Elias

During the early ’70s, Womack was one of the most prolific and
talented artists. With albums like Communication and Lookin’ For a
Love Again, Womack quickly became one of the most prolific and
talented singers in R&B/pop. This album’s predecessor, I Don’t Know
What The World Is Coming To, did show a slight decline in his Muscle
Shoals sound and his writing skills. Safety Zone finds Womack getting a
sonic overhaul whether he needed it or not. Produced by David
Rubinson who was behind the boards for everyone from the Pointer
Sisters to Herbie Hancock, it creates a slick, up to the minute style
that may be too “perfect” for Womack’s core fans. The album’s first
track, “Everything’s Going to Be Alright,” meanders and sets the
standard for this album’s pursuit of style over substance. The two
covers, “Something You Got” and “I Wish It Would It Rain,” both
feature eccentric arrangements but Womack’s vocals seem facile
around the edges. As an album like the Facts of Life scored on his
honesty throughout, Safety Zone only has two instances that come
within striking distance. “Trust in Me,” a self-written gem first recorded
by his friend Janis Joplin, has Womack’s gritty and wry vocal finally
breaking free from the Rubinson’s glossy production and arranging
style. “Daylight” is one of Womack’s best tracks. As Womack sings
“The real set don’t get started/’Til every one else is in,” you hear him
conflicted, but not bothered enough to stop. For the track, Rubinson’s
offhanded grace made the song even stronger. The main problem
with Safety Zone is that it doesn’t possess the earthy and challenging
productions of Womack’s earlier ’70s albums. He too often seems
straitjacketed in an attempt to curb his eccentric nature. Fans of
Womack no doubt will love the great tracks but will have little or no
need for the rest.

I happen to like this album quite a bit, but for me the attraction is
mainly due to the fact that I’m into rap music as well. Not to say that
any of the cuts on this album constitute rap per se, but every song
seems to have a distinct urban flavor to it–with the notable exception
of After Hours.

After Hours is without a doubt the signature piece on the album, one
of the single most brilliant songs in the hisory of light jazz. You’ve
probably heard it countless times on your favorite light jazz radio
station, and once you hear it, it’ll be in your head for hours! Absolutely
beautiful. But if I had bought The Antidote it expecting every song to
have After Hours’ easygoing sound and indescribable “coolness”, I’d
have been sorely disappointed. Viva la RealAudio! Use it, folks; listen to
samples before you buy. As I said, I personally like the urban style
that IMHO seems to be shared by every other song on the album, so
I got the best of both worlds (After Hours plus 8 or 9 other nice
tracks). If you’re not into the more urban type of light jazz, you may
not like the album. So give the non-After-Hours cuts a listen. Me, I
couldn’t be happier.

Straight fusion set by trumpeter Tom Browne, replete with double-
tracked vocals and songs heavy on backbeats and light on solos.
Everything is nicely played, and the album did do moderately well on
charts and with Adult Contemporary audiences.

Way back in 1979 I heard this album on jazz radio in New York City
and was very impressed by it and heard that it was by a neighborhood
guy by way of being a student at the prestedgous Music and Art High
School in the area. He was also a featured player at a local jazz
venue… The Breezin’ Lounge on 143rd & Broadway (now defunkt). I
liked it so much I bought 2 copies and bragged to my friends about
my good taste in jazz music…Now I wish I had not bragged so much
and made them jealous of my music collection…But, over the past 30
years this album has given me much solace and peace of mind…I
hope it does so for you as well.

With the release of Images a lot of changes had come to The
Crusaders. They had to do without Larry Carlton, ammong other things
and it wasn’t all that surprising that the remaining trio of Joe
Sample,Wilton Felder and Stix Hooper would challange themselves to
further refine their sound. The previous album really showed this could
work but this album actually went many steps above that and wound
up being one of,if not THE best known album they’d ever made. Well
it’s hard not to go on and on about the title song on this album. It’s
just one of those ultra slippery and elastic grooves that allows for so
many instrumental interludes that they keep it going for over 11
minutes and the great part is you hardly know it’s passed. A then
obscure and gifted singer Randy Crawford made her career with her
delightful, soulfully funky lead vocals on this song as it goes from a
chilly, jazzy piano solo from Sample and onto this high strutting funk
groove that jams like you would’nt believe but has both enough great
improvised fender rhodes and sax solos for jazz listeners and enough
dancabily and orchestration for the disco crowd. It pretty much gets
everybody and ends up being one of the key classics of jazz-funk
during the disco era. If that song is your kind of thing the rest of the
album keeps going in the same league. True there are no more vocals
but it’s hard to deny the slippery, midtempo funk of “Rodeo
Drive”,”Carnival Of The Night” or the tight “The Hustler”. Even though
only one song has a vocal these album actually functions as something
of an instrumental tone poem that deals with the idea of the title itself.
Being a full on urban funk album the music is sneaky, mysterious, full of
surprises and very sensual but also maintains a certain heavy sheen
that makes it out as one of their more stylized albums-not as if they
didn’t do a bad job of that before. “My Lady” and “Night Faces” have
a cooler approch to the groove and as always these musicians total
awareness of their individual sense of harmonics and rhythm is
amazing and anyone can hear it. It’s definately one of those often
spoken of classics that deserves it’s good reputation and caps off what
basically ammounted up to an incredible musical decade for an
incredible group of musicians.

I first heard Earl Klugh when he was the opening act for Bob James at
the Lansing (Michigan) Civic Center in 1978. Although I didn’t know of
him at the time, I was immediately captivated by his talent.
Unfortunately, a large number of his albums (back in the days when
vinyl was king) released after this simply don’t have the emotion that
this CD has. A stellar ensemble of musicians was gathered in the
studio for recording this CD in the mid ’70s, including Steve Gadd, Will
Lee, Louis Johnson, David Grusin etc. Patti Austin and Vivian Cherry
are the vocalists on Living Inside Your Love. The first three tracks are
fusion at its best. The balance of the tracks are more mellow, but
have a geat sense of emotion, and are testament to Earl’s
tremendous talent. Other Earl Klugh CD I enjoy is Finger Paintings,
which was recorded shortly after this one.

by Thom Jurek AllMusic

Given that ‘Round About Midnight was Miles Davis’ debut Columbia
recording, it was both a beginning and an ending. Certainly the
beginning of his recording career with the label that issued most if not
all of his important recordings; and the recording debut of an exciting
new band that had within its ranks Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers,
pianist Red Garland, and an all but unknown tenor player named John
Coltrane. The title track was chosen because of its unique rendition
with a muted trumpet, and debuted at the Newport Jazz Festival the
summer before to a thunderous reception. The date was also an
ending of sorts because by the time of the album’s release, Davis had
already broken up the band, which re-formed with Cannonball Adderley
a year later as a sextet, but it was a tense year.

Musically, this sound is as unusual and as beautiful as it was when
issued in 1956. Davis had already led the charge through two changes
in jazz — both cool jazz and hard bop — and was beginning to move in
another direction here that wouldn’t be defined for another two years.
Besides the obvious lyrical and harmonic beauty of “Round About
Midnight” that is arguably its definitive version even over Monk’s own,
there are the edges of Charlie Parker’s “Au Leu-Cha” with its
Bluesology leaping from every chord change in Red Garland’s left
hand. Coltrane’s solo here too is notable for its stark contrast to Davis’
own: he chooses an angular tack where he finds the heart of the
mode and plays a melody in harmonic counterpoint to the changes but
never sounds outside. Cole Porter’s “All of You” has Davis quoting
from Louis Armstrong’s “Basin Street Blues” in his solo that takes out
the tune, and Coltrane has never respected a melody so much. But
it’s in “Bye-Bye Blackbird” that we get to hear the band gel as a unit,
beginning with Davis playing through the melody, muted and sweet,
slightly flatted out until he reaches the harmony on the refrain and
begins his solo on a high note. Garland is doing more than comping in
the background; he’s slipping chord shapes into those interval cracks
and shifting them as the rhythm section keeps “soft time.” When
Coltrane moves in for his break, rather than Davis’ spare method, he
smatters notes quickly all though the melodic body of the tune and
Garland has to compensate harmonically, moving the mode and
tempo up a notch until his own solo can bring it back down again.
Which he does with a gorgeous all-blues read of the tune utilizing first
one hand and then both hands to create fat harmonic chords to bring
Davis back in to close it out. It’s breathtaking how seamless it all is.
There’s little else to say except that ‘Round About Midnight is among
the most essential of Davis’ Columbia recordings.

If you are wanting some diversity from cool jazz to hip
hop…whatever…if you are into funk jazz music that can get you up
and happening or just lay back then this 2 cd set is one for your
collection. I must admit that this CD was a surprise in the new
adventure each song takes me through, everytime I play it. Great
compilation as always from Blue Note. Can’t say much else good
about it without sounding wishy washy…man it is one of the best CDs
in my collection of over 600 CDs.

I remember hearing this album at my friend’s house a few years ago and just
being blown away. I have searched every used vinyl store since looking for it
to no avail. Finally it’s been re-released on CD and I can die a happy man.
“Hip Pockets” and “Almustafa the Beloved” rival any jazz-funk-rock fusion
songs ever. Cobham’s dumming is incredibly intense, Duke’s keyboard sounds
are revolutionary, Scofield is funky, and Al Johnson is one of the tighest
bassists ever. There is some really out stuff on this album that not everyone
will like but there are also a few really amazing gems on it. I wish they’d
release more of the tapes from this concert! If you buy this album you will not
be dissapointed.

Organist Jimmy McGriff and altoist Hank Crawford always make for a
potent team. With guitarist Wayne Boyd and drummer Vance James
completing the quartet, McGriff and Crawford explore an appealing
mixture of blues, soulful ballads and riff tunes. Few surprises occur but
many of the songs (particularly “Movin’ Upside the Blues,” “The
Sermon,” “When I Fall in Love” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”) are fairly
memorable. The fans of these fine players will not be disappointed.
