From Dusty Groove

A great one from Ben E King’s “Supernatural” comeback years in the
mid 70s – recorded at Sigma Sound with a really stellar approach on
both the groovers and the mellow tunes! Ben’s really letting his vocals
open up on the set – going for that richness that was sometimes held
back in the more uptown arrangements of the 60s, but which really
flowers here in a fuller, richer, smooth soul mode. Arrangements are
by Norman Harris, Bert De Coteaux, Ron Kersey, and Ron Baker –
and the album’s a great example of how the Sigma approach could
take a great singer and make them even better! Titles include the
Sam Dees tracks “I Betcha Didn’t Know That”, “Standing In The
Wings Of Heartache”, “No Danger Ahead”, and “Tower Of Strength” –
plus a great cover of Ashford & Simpson’s “I Had A Love”, and the
cuts “Smooth Sailing”, “We Got Love”, and “Everybody Plays The
Fool”.

Four different mixes of Doctor Love (wow).
Three versions of Double Cross: one is a 10 minute remix from Tom
Moulton and a rarely heard remix by Larry Levin. This 2-disc release
from Unidisc is not as complete as the Salsoul 2-disc release but the
House dubbed remix of “Love Thang” by David Morales is straight out
of the Garage. Lost in all these extended remixes and redubs is the
almost 3 minute funky “Jimmy D”. Always wondered why it was never
released as a single. Very enjoyable.

by Amy Hanson AllMusic

A little under a year before the Ritchie Family’s “Best Disco in Town”
stormed the nightlife, they debuted their lush disco style on 1975’s
Brazil. Replete with all those wonderful sonic Sigma Studio keynotes,
which include lush strings and chukka chukka guitar and are
underpinned at times by minute moments of scything rock & roll, the
band delivered, if not some of the best, then certainly some of the
earliest disco in town. While the title track, its disco rhythm twined with
strings and flute, soared to number 11 on the pop charts, it was
followed to number 84 by the remarkably shrill and often mistitled
“Dance With Me” — a number with vocals that don’t sound like they’re
part of the same song, let alone in the right key. But that mainstream
introduction to the band is misleading, because they actually strike
brighter sparks elsewhere on the album, both on the Motown sound of
“Pinball” and on the eight-minute epic “Fenesi,” which features
unyielding grooves and a flute solo. At the end of the day, the Ritchie
Family are best remembered as little more than a B-movie disco band
with a nice line in space-age get ups — and, as Brazil pre-dates
spacesuits, it can’t even fall back on that. Overlook this costuming
catastrophe, however, and the album has a subtle flamboyance that is
often just as pleasing.

Let me say from the start that I think this is a marvelous album. The Mighty
Clouds of Joy are one of the world’s most renowned gospel artists. For more
than 50 years Joy has been delivering His Word and spreading the message
of Jesus. On this particular outing it’s done in more or less an R&B setting. His
message is more sublte but ‘Joy’ is no less intense in their unique way of
delivering it. “It’s Time” kicks off the album in uptempo style, a dance floor
classic. Original member and lead singer Joe Legion is in top form, belting out
the lyrics with an urgency as if the Rapture has indeed arrived. His voice is
beyond soulful, pounding your ears with everything in him til you’re
wondering how he can deliver another note. Jimmy Ellis of the Trammps
comes to mind in a decent comparison.

Listen to his ferver on “Everthing Is Going Up.” Man! Where did he get them
chops? Truly divine inspiration. Leon Polk, Richard Wallace, Elmo Franklin &his
brother Ermant do a great job behind Joe. Their harmonies are an essential
component on “Stoned World.” “Mighty Cloud Of Joy” is another standout
song that will have your mind heaven bound while your body is sinfully
groovin right here on Earth.

‘Joy’ takes the pace off with “(You Think) You’re Doin’ It On Your Own”, a nice
ballad that continues to subtly deliver the message that there’s a greater
power than man in the universe. Overall, It’s Time is a winning combination
of rich soul and R&B, attracting new members to their flock, with a
flavorful touch of gospel to keep the faithful’s interest.

Biography by Jason Ankeny AMG

Contemporary gospel’s preeminent group, the Mighty Clouds of Joy carried
the torch for the traditional quartet vocal style throughout an era dominated
by solo acts and choirs; pioneering a distinctively funky sound which over
time gained grudging acceptance even among purists, they pushed spiritual
music in new and unexpected directions, even scoring a major disco hit. The
Mighty Clouds of Joy were formed in Los Angeles during the mid-’50s by
schoolmates Joe Ligon and Johnny Martin; while still in their teens, the
original group — which also included brothers Ermant and Elmo Franklin, Leon
Polk and Richard Wallace — made their recorded debut in 1960 with “Steal
Away to Jesus,” cut for the Peacock label. Their debut LP Family Circle
arrived a year later.

In the years that followed, the Mighty Clouds earned a reputation among
gospel’s greatest showmen; one of the first groups to incorporate
choreographed moves into their act, their nimble footwork and bright, color-
coordinated outfits earned them the sobriquet “The Temptations of Gospel.”
More importantly, they were the first group to add bass, drums and
keyboards to the standard quartet accompaniment of solo guitar, resulting in
a sound which horrified traditionalists but appealed to younger listeners — so
much so, in fact, that the Mighty Clouds became the first gospel act ever to
appear on television’s Soul Train, where they performed their disco smash
“Mighty High.”

Their crossover success continued with opening slots for secular pop stars
including Marvin Gaye, the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon, whom the group
backed during a month-long stint at Madison Square Garden. While lineup
changes plagued the Mighty Clouds throughout their career, they remained
active through the 1990s; in addition to co-founders Ligon and Wallace, their
latter-day incarnation also included Michael McCowin, Wilbert Williams,
Johnny Valentine and Ron Staples.

From Dusty Groove

One of the greatest east coast vocal group albums from the seventies, and
still a sought-after classic! The band’s an East Coast sweet soul vocal group,
with a deep soul feel and some heartbreaking vocals that hit the upper
reaches of the harmony style – and they’ve got a super-dope look and style
that puts them in the company of groups like Soul Generation, True
Reflection, and Natural Four. Norman Harris, Vince Montana, and Bobby Eli all
had a hand in this, so you know the production is right, and the sound is large
with a sweet Philly mix of moods. Titles include “It’s Rough Out Here“, “I
Found Love At Last”, “Those Were The Best Days Of My Life”, and “I’ll Always
Love You.”

A killer for the Joneses – probably their strongest album all the way through,
thanks to some great production and arrangements by Bobby Eli! This one’s
got the group taking the fragile harmony style of their earlier records, and
filtering it through the Philly powerhouse groove to create a stronger, more
high-stepping sound. A good mix of uptempo groovers and a few mellower
tracks, and titles include “Who Loves You”, “In Love Again”, “Groovin’ On Ya”
, “Music To My Ears”, and “Rat Race”.

The Joneses biography (From Raiderofthelostark blog)

Formed 1969, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

The group comprised of:

Cy Brooks (lead singer)
Glenn Dorsey
Sam White
Reginald Noble
and his brother Wendell Noble

They were one of several groups from that time that represented a return to
the vocal group format the became prevelant in the previous two decades.
During the early 70s, the group began recording in the soft-soul mode that
featured a falsetto lead, sweet harmonies along with fully orchestrated
arrangements.

The original group formed in Pittsburgh in 1969, however the recording group
arrived at its final line-up after moving to New York to record for YM.R
Records in the early 70’s.

The members of the V.M.P. group featured falsetto lead Cy Brooks, Glenn
Dorsey, Sam White and brothers Reginald and Wendell Noble, and on that
label they had a New York hit with ‘Pretty Pretty’.
Moving to the Pride label in 1973, they had another local hit, ‘Pull My String’.
Mercury Records then signed them.

Cy Brooks left at this point and his lead spot was taken by baritone Harold
Taylor (who had earlier been with the group in Pittsburgh).
At Mercury the Joneses first had success locally in Baltimore with ‘Baby Don’t
Do It’, but in 1974 they began a string of national hits including ‘Hey Babe’
(number 18 R & B).

They then followed with their crossover hit, ‘Sugar Pie Guy’ (number 10 R &
B, number 47 pop), also in 1974. They also had considerable success with ‘l
Can’t See What You See in Me’ (number 28 R & B) in 1975.

The Joneses broke up in 1975, but in the following years there were four
resurrections of the group, the first in 1977 and the last in 1992, and each
time the only constant in the new line-ups being Glenn Dorsey.

johhnyspencer.info

The Joneses were a five piece vocal group who also played instruments, they
were: Harold Taylor, lead vocals and saxophone; Lee Valentine, guitar;
Glenn Dorsey, bass; Richard Pratt percussion, and Richard Tee, keyboards.
Although Sugar Pie Guy is categorised as a Disco cut, it is also very much a
classy Soul recording, it was later remixed and released as a 12 inch in 1983;
which was a long way from the original song that was being played in the
pub’s with girls singing along to the lyrics while mixing with those silly Sugar
Pie Guys.

Sweet Charlie Babe contains ten powerhouse tracks by Jacksonville, FL
native Jackie Moore. A good mixture of Southern and urban R&B soul from
the saucy, sweet soul diva. The slinky “Precious, Precious” zoomed up the
charts and became her biggest hit; it employs a similar groove that made hits
out of “Trapped by a Thing Called Love” by Denise LaSalle and “Make Me
Yours” by Bettye Swann. “If” is lyrically infectious; Joe Simon also recorded
the Bunny Sigler and Phil Hurtt tune. The floating “Both Ends Against the
Middle” delights every time it spins. Moore does justice to the Elgins’ “Darling
Baby,” the rolling ballad is one of Holland-Dozier-Holland’s most charming
songs. Moore shows no shame singing about her man Charlie, on “Sweet
Charlie Babe
,” an upbeat testimonial, with a message similar to the
Marvelettes’ “Don’t Mess with Bill.” She dispenses wise advice on “Clean Up
Your Own Yard.” “Time” is an exquisite ballad eloquently done by Moore;
however, beat ballads and deep soul sagas like “Cover Me” and “Willpower”
defined Moore’s style. If you can’t find this slab of vinyl, these songs and
more are available on the CD Precious, Precious: The Best of Jackie Moore.

“Heavy Vibes” fully showcases Montana’s diversified musical style from scaled
down rhythmic club classics, to full orchestral compositions, Latin ballads and
even a bit of jazz. This is definitely one of his most flavorful productions and
features Philadelphia’s most prominent musicians – many of Montana‘s session
mates who were the main members of both the MFSB and The Salsoul
Orchestra.

Was there ever a better harmony soul group than Blue Magic? Hearing a
record like this, it’s hard to think so — and the album’s pure east coast magic
all the way through! The group still manage to keep the fragile quality that
made their first work so great, but they’ve also got a wonderfully confident
approach too — using arrangements from Norman Harris, Bobby Eli, and Vince
Montana to soar with a Philly proudness that’s totally great — never disco or
club, but with a full, rich quality that’s totally great. Tracks include their big hit
“Three Ring Circus”, a nice follow-up to the earlier “Sideshow”, and other
titles include “Let Me Be The One”, “Looking For A Friend”, “When Ya Coming
Home”, and “You Won’t Have To Tell Me Goodbye”.

In the ’70s, Philadelphia’s most famous soul empire was Kenny Gamble and
Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, home of the O’Jays, the
Intruders, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Three Degrees, and Billy Paul.
But the Thom Bell/Linda Creed school of Philly soul was also huge thanks to
heavyweights like the Stylistics and the Delfonics. When Blue Magic hit big in
1974, their smooth, polished sound owed a lot to the Bell/Creed school; this
incredibly promising debut album finds the Philly vocal group wearing their
Stylistics/Delfonics/Moments heritage like a badge of honor. But the LP also
demonstrates that Blue Magic was a fine group in their own right. The single
that put Blue Magic on the map was “Sideshow,” a hit ballad that is as clever
as it is melancholy. “Sideshow” describes a circus, but not an ordinary circus
— a circus in which all of the attractions are noteworthy because of their
terrible luck when it comes to romantic relationships. The tune is simply
brilliant; like so many great blues and country gems, “Sideshow” finds a very
witty way to talk about romantic disappointments. But even though
“Sideshow” is one of Philly soul’s all-time classics, it isn’t the only song that
makes this LP worth owning. The rest of the album is also superb, and that
includes the snappy “Look Me Up,” as well as dreamy, gossamer ballads like
“Spell” and “What’s Come Over Me” (which Blue Magic revisited on a 1975
remake that features singer Margie Joseph). All of the albums that Blue Magic
recorded in the ’70s are worth hearing, but this 1974 debut is arguably the
finest and most essential of the bunch.

My Way contains Major Harris’ number one R&B hit “Love Won’t Let Me Wait,”
a smooth exercise in romantic eroticism, and its bouncy successor, “Loving
You Is Mellow.” The disc features a smooth, aching remake of Blue Magic’s
“Sideshow,” co-written by guitarist Bobby Eli, as were the two previously
mentioned singles, “Sweet Tomorrow,” and “Just a Thing That I Do.” “Each
Morning I Wake Up” and “After Loving You” are the best of three
compositions by Melvin and Mervin Steals, aka Mystro & Lyric, best known for
scribing the Spinners’ “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love.” The title track is Harris’
Philly soul rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” which really doesn’t stray
that far from the original.

Amazon.com Review

Major Harris #1 R & B and soul epic Love Wont Let Me Wait kicks off the
exclusive Friday Music Soul Classics release My Way…. This huge 1975 chart
album netted the former Delphonics vocalist a smash pop and r & b hit album.
Including Every Morning I Wake Up and the Philly classic Side Show and many
others, with its slick production ala Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees. this album was a
home run for radio and club play. This is the first time this has ever been
issued on compact disc or remastered in North America! Remastered soulfully
from the original Atlantic Records vault tapes by Joe Reagoso (Boz Scaggs,
The Spinners), this new compact disc features original art elements, liner
notes and just great sound as you would expect from Friday Music.

The third Blue Magic LP continues to subtly refine and expand the group’s
approach. While their gossamer harmonies remain squarely at the forefront,
13 Blue Magic Lane features more pronounced club grooves than on their
previous records, bowing to the inexorable shift from classic Philly soul to
disco. Arranged by Norman Harris and Ron Kersey, several songs feature
electronic textures that add surprisingly complementary muscle to Blue
Magic’s delicate vocals. In fact, despite the presence of sumptuous ballads
like “Chasing Rainbows” and “Loneliest House on the Block,” up-tempo fare
like “We’re on the Right Track” is even better. The times would later pass Blue
Magic
by, but for this glorious album, they were not only in lockstep with the
prevailing attitudes but further ahead of the curve than any of their
contemporaries.

A different play order, a new cover, one great addition to the ten track
original released back in 1973 on the Philly Groove label, but other than that
and some extended play on “Armed” and “Smarty Pants” (which for some
reason was done in mono! Go figure) this is the same album that caught
people outside of Philadelphia by surprise and got them up and dancing. Al
Green’s “Love And Happiness” is punched up to give it a discoesque feel. It
works for a while. A different rhythm core lead by drummer Charles “76” Collins
gives the cut a slightly different yet still Philly flava to it. The horns are
sharper and the bass has a little more punch. If only it was 2 minutes
shorter…

“Smarty Pants” brings back the original MFSB to support the three
ladies. “Newsy Neighbors” is a clever take on people who get up in other people’s
business. Both “This Is The House Where Love Died” and “One Step Away” have a
Motown feel to them. The surprise cut is “The Player!” All 7 plus minutes is
included, stolen from the First Choice album of the same name. “Running Out
Of Fools” is a light stepper that neither makes or breaks the album. The last
three songs slow the frantic pace, giving lovers a reason to cuddle up. The album
has been remastered. It sounds sharper and crisper than the previous releases.
UInidisc (from Canada) did an incredible job. It’s definitely worth listening to.

“Free Man” is one of the classics of the early disco era and was the pinnacle
of South Shore Commission’s output. The DC-based act had previously
performed as the Exciters; the name changed to South Shore Commission in
1970. Atlantic signed them up for a series of singles, but nothing charted.
Their luck changed with the arrival of producer Bunny Sigler. One of Philly’s
most eccentric studio talents, Sigler saw in the Commission an outlet for his
compositions and an opportunity for his proteges Instant Funk to sharpen
their skills.

“Free Man,” an utterly real lyric about relationships, had no chance of being
recorded by anybody on the masculinity-obsessed Philadelphia International
label because of its gay theme. The Commission had no such reservations
and took the song to #9 in late 1975. The extended version became a
sought-after classic thanks to the breakdown by Instant Funk, their finest
moment on wax prior to “I’ve Got My Mind Made Up” years later. “A Train
Called Freedom” and a cover of “We’re On the Right Track” finished off their
chart ride.

Harold trudges on, Teddy Pendergrass-less, on a lackluster effort. The Blue Album only has six songs; one, “Tonight’s the Night,” rambles on for over eight minutes. Gene McFadden and John Whitehead contribute three of the six songs — not their best, but “Your Love Is Taking Me on a Journey” isn’t half bad. Harold puts some nice touches on “I Should Be Your Lover,” a Gamble & Huff song originally recorded by the O’Jays. Harold added some lyrics and monologue and gets co-writer credits on the new version.
———————————————————————
“Prayin'” features David Ebo doing a terrific job singing lead. It turned out to be a dance floor classic in clubs around the world. “If You’re Looking For Someone To Love” has Sharon Paige out front in a nice stepper. A more than decent album that deserves a first look, then another just to be sure.

If the Trammps were assembled to perform only disco songs, then Where the
Happy People Go supports that notion — in a good way. Every selection here
rings with disco. Even though there are no ballads or moderate grooves, the
Trammps still come across with some smooth vocals and invigorating rhythms.
The first release from this dance album was the melodic “That’s Where the
Happy People Go.” It broke into the Billboard R&B Top 20 at number 12,
staying on the charts for 16 weeks. The second single was the busier “Soul
Searchin’ Time.” A bit more rapid than its predecessor, and also more
instrumentally involved, it came with a social message. With the exception of
one non-vocal track, “Love Is a Funky Thing,” everything here is up-tempo
disco.

Though still at a more formative stage of their career at the time that this
was made, if you listen closely you can hear the rich melodicism that would be
the trademark of their classic 80s material starting to emerge. Not the
completely listenable album that Just Gets Better With Time or Toast To The
Ladies is, but still something that both Whispers aficionadoes and fans of
good 70s soul should check out, especially for the beautiful 6 minute long
“message” ballad “You’re Only As Good As You Think You Are”.

For their fourth Atlantic Records outing, the Spinners — Henry Fambrough
(baritone vocal), Billy Henderson (tenor vocal), Pervis Jackson (bass vocal),
Bobbie Smith (tenor vocal) and Philippe Wynne (tenor vocal) — cook up
another sizable serving of Philly Soul under the care of producer/arranger
Thom Bell. Following on the heels of three sequential gold records, it is not
particularly surprising that they would continue in the same vein. The
danceable R&B grooves — especially the undeniably memorable “They Just
Can’t Stop It (The Games People Play)” — not to mention the soulful slow
jams, were ultimately a factor in making Pick of the Litter (1975) the Spinners’
most successful long-player. Although the entire affair clocks in at just over
half-an-hour, they pack a great deal into the effort, commencing with the
dynamic mid-tempo “Honest I Do.” The four-on-the-floor tempo and compact
string arrangement are part and parcel of what made their sound so instantly
discernible among concurrent copycat combos. They likewise had Wynne’s
versatile vocals in their arsenal, which was no doubt a significant component
in their second 7″ side, the compelling “Love or Leave.” Instrumentally, the
distinctive distorted guitar and refined brass accompaniment are all courtesy
of Bell’s singular musical vision, and faultlessly executed by the equally
unmistakable MFSB Orchestra. “All That Glitters Ain’t Gold” is a catchy number
sporting a brisk propelling rhythm and score foreshadowing Bell’s work with
Elton John on “Mama Can’t Buy You Love.” The batch of ballads on Pick of the
Litter are proportionately excellent as well, highlighted by Dionne Warwick’s
second guest appearance. Fambrough’s debut as a solo lead demonstrates a
gentle and supple intonation, perfectly matched to Warwick’s agile and
affective style. The album’s primary focus track was the aforementioned
“They Just Can’t Stop It (The Games People Play).” The slightly, albeit
judiciously edited version became a crossover smash, landing in the upper
reaches of the Pop Singles survey and topping the R&B countdown in July of
1975. Trading vocals with Wynne and Jackson — whose resonant “12:45”
interjection became a hallmark of the song — is backing session singer
Barbara Ingram. Because the group was touring at the time, Fambrough was
unavailable to put the finishing touches on the recording. Bell was under the
gun to complete the production, so he chose Ingram to step in, and in doing
so lent a whole new dimension to the lyrical banter. Those seeking a
thoroughly solid effort Philly Soul are encouraged to spin the appropriately
named Pick of the Litter.

As 1975’s classic Pick of the Litter seemed to garner its strength from
melancholy and faultless arrangements, this 1976 studio follow-up often
wallows in style over substance and platitudes. The pretty but vacuous “Now
That We’re Together” is all over the road and has inane lyrics like, “You’re
such a great crowd/Why don’t you sing loud.” Other tracks “You’re All I Need
in Life” and “If You Can’t Be in Love” all put into practice arrangements and
themes that were better executed on New and Improved. Although things
get a little mushy here, producer Thom Bell and the Spinners do have their
moments here. The highly danceable and infectious “Rubberband Man”
breaks out of this effort’s stodgy surroundings and gave lead singer Philippe
Wynne plenty of room for his skilled scatting and effortless riffing. The best
non-hit on this effort is “Toni My Love.” The song is jazzy rumination on a
mature relationship and it’s the only track that’s skilled enough to stand tall on
Pick of the Litter. Despite the few high points, Happiness Is Being With the
Spinners winds down before any of its predecessors did. The best of the last
tracks, “The Clown” is a little overwrought and Philippe Wynne sounds like his
hands are tied. Happiness Is Being With the Spinners is one of the first Bell
efforts to be partially recorded at Kaye Smith Studios in Seattle, WA, and
was mastered at A&M Studios rather than Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound. That
fact arguably changed the winning formula and for the most part this falls
short of the work that came before it.

The switch between lead singers presented its shares of woe. Whereas
Philippe Wynne fit neatly in Thom Bell’s production style, at this point Bell had
no idea what to do with new lead singer John Edwards. Coupling that
indisputable fact with the continuing decline of the songwriting, Spinners/8
isn’t the most proficient album to come down the pike. Not everything’s bad
here, however. Bobbie Smith’s playful lead on the well-produced “I’m Gonna
Getcha” starts things off on a deceptively blithe note. With lyrics like “Count
the days you can still run free” and “There’s no escaping me now,” stalking
never sounded so mellifluous. While “I’m Tired of Giving” and “Painted Magic”
are nonsensical retreads, the best parts of Spinners/8 had Bell tinkering with
his style to accommodate Edwards’ booming and all-encompassing vocals.
Enlivened by Edwards’ firepower and command, “You’ve Got the Love I Need”
is on the track as he sings/shouts, “You’ve got me walking/Talking to myself.”
The charming and anachronistic “Heaven on Earth (So Fine)” is the only single
release from this effort and later showed up on their 1991 anthology A One
of a Kind Affair. While the Edwards-led “Back in the Arms of Love” and “Easy
Come, Easy Go” are locked into the old style, the last track attempts a new
sound. The synth-adorned ballad “Baby I Need Your Love (You’re the Only
One)” has smooth harmony and the minimal backing gives Edwards a great
chance to vamp loudly near the end. Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the
good here, making Spinners/8 the most problematic album Bell produced for
the group.

From this album’s inception to its end, the mellifluous string and horn
arrangements are irresistibly striking. The first of two singles was the title
track “He’s a Friend.” An inspirational number with a disco flair showing praise
to the Almighty without ever mentioning the word God. It scooted its way to
number two on the Billboard R&B charts; holding that position for three
consecutive weeks. The second release was the Caribbean flavored “Get It
While It’s Hot.” This joyous, bouncy number features some passionate female
background vocals. It slipped into the Top 30 at number 24. No album fillers
here. The vocals of Eddie Kendricks are wonderfully impressive as he injects
an incohesive texture to his delivery, but smoothly returns to his ultra-velvet
tone. This veteran singer masterfully utilizes his various vocal tools
throughout this album. The production, arranging, and savvy vocals of Eddie
Kendricks make this one marvelous album.

Lindsy Planer

Although the title could be interpreted to portend the relationship between
Eddie Kendricks and his longtime record label, contextual and lyrical clues
would suggest Goin’ Up in Smoke (1976) has a motif of triumph over tragedy.
In many ways it is a continuation of the work that had begun on He’s a Friend
(1976) with songwriter/arranger and multi-instrumentalist Norman Harris back
at the helm of the same Philly-based Stigma Sound Studio with many
musicians likewise making encore appearances. With pop and soul music
having been temporarily hijacked by disco, it stands to reason that Harris’
scores reflect the latest trend in pop music. All the more significant is that the
title song joined “Goin’ Up in Smoke,” “Music Man,” “Born Again,” and “Thanks
for the Memories” as they collectively sent the LP to a very respectable
number 11 on the then-recently created Dance/Disco survey. That impressive
accomplishment aside, in retrospect Kendricks does not seem well served by
the aggressive brass section. He occasionally struggles to be heard over
them. Or perhaps producers intentionally buried the vocalist deep inside the
mix as to not get in the way of the four-on-the floor beat. To a similar effect,
the slow churning of “The Newness Is Gone” is awash in overbearing strings
that sadly detract from the intimacy of the artist’s performance. While the
heart is definitely in the right place, “Don’t You Want Light” is little more than
an homage to “The Hustle” and again, does little to reveal the singer’s
talents.

Hello world!   4 comments

The Sound Of Philadelphia is a unique sound. Just like The Motown Sound was and The Stax Sound was. In my lifetime I was fortunate enough to hear all of this great music when they first grabbed hold of our ears, feet, souls and hearts and wouldn’t let go until we were exhausted from whatever activity we were doing while it was playing, be it shaking our asses in the disco, swapping spit in a shadowy corner, or mixing moans in the dark.

In my mind there is no doubt which of the three sounds moved me the most. I loved Otis Redding. Aretha Franklin trembled my lower lip when she sang “Ain’t No Way.” I wanted to BE a Temptation just so I could step like they did. I wished I could ‘make em wet’ like Marvin did when he crooned into the mic. But there ain’t no sound like The Philly Sound.

The Philly Sound came at me from all directions and invaded my soul with a feeling that I can only describe as finding a missing note in the harmony of life and completing my own melody. What separates the three is where Motown was bubblegum Pop and Stax was Gritty, Philly was sophisticated Soul. Motown and Stax brought me from a boy sucking his thumb to the brink of being a man. Phlly took me from popping pimples to wearing rubbers. No, that ain’t romantic…but it’s real.
🙂
