The only officially released in-concert Parliament-Funkadelic album,
Live: P-Funk Earth Tour captures George Clinton and company at their
peak in 1977, compiling recordings of a couple shows (January 19 at
the Los Angeles Forum and January 21 at the Oakland Coliseum). The
double-LP/single-CD album can’t do justice to the group’s extravagant
theatrics, most memorably the landing of the mothership, but it’s a
wonderful showcase for their musical ability and their catalog of great
songs, most of which come from the 1976 albums Mothership
Connection and The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein. No performance was
ever the same for these guys, and that’s a major aspect of this
album’s entertainment value, for it’s interesting to compare these live
performances to their studio counterparts. Of particular note are the
15-minute extended performance of “Dr. Funkenstein” and the
three-minute montage “Landing (Of the Holy Mothership).” Though
unessential, Live: P-Funk Earth Tour is worth investigating for anyone
curious about the Parliament-Funkadelic live experience and is a
welcome alternative to the many bootlegs and latter-day P-Funk All
Stars live recordings that have circulated over the years.

Recorded in December 1973 at the O’Jays’ commercial peak, the live
format gave the group chance to stretch, length-wise, beyond the
time allotted to them in the studio. Although the disc is 47 minutes,
there are only seven songs (six, if you don’t count “Introducing the
O’Jays”). So you get an eight-minute “Back Stabbers,” a six-minute
“Love Train,” a ten-minute “Sunshine,” and a long cruise through
“When the World’s at Peace,” though “Put Your Hands Together”
(then a month away from entering the American Top 40) is pretty
concise. On the one hand, these live versions don’t match the snazzier
arrangements, and greater economy, of the studio ones. On the
other, you want something a little different from a live album, and this
does give you the chance to hear the group elasticize their material,
with a live band and, of course, some in-song raps. Whoever thought
it was a good idea to do a ten-minute cover of Skylark’s “Wildflower,”
however, was wrong.

Whew! Where to begin? This CD s one of my all-time favorites, not only
because of Gerald Albright’s amazing playing on it, but also because it gave
me an all new respect for his playing ability. If you’re only accustomed to his
more tame smooth jazz work, consider yourself informed! Gerald tackles some
jazz standards with simply amazing results. From the first track, you’ll find
yourself caught up in Albright’s blistering technique and seemingly endless
melodic ideas. Only the frst half of the CD is live, but it’s great from start to
finish. It even features another of my favorite artists, Kirk Whalum, on
“Limehouse Blues.” Kirk should raise a few eyebrows as well. Back to the
album, I really can’t say enough about it. This album alone has been a huge
influence on my saxophone playing and it never gets old. The crown jewel of
this album is undoubetdly “Georgia On My Mind.” It makes this album a must-
have all by itself. Gerald pulls out all the stops and constructs a gripping solo
packed wth emotion and lightning speed. If this one doesn’t get your hands
and feet tapping, it’s time to check your pulse. “C Jamm Blues” never slows
down and shows off Gerald’s abilty to take a simple head and turn it upside-
down. It’s easy to hear shades of bop in this one. Not all of the tracks are so
fast-paced though. “My One And Only Love” and “Softly At Sunrise” gripping
ballads to say the least, especially in the hands of a master saxophonist like
Gerald Albright. No collection should be without this CD. I only wish Gerald
would release another like it, but I can hardly call that criticism. Run and get
this CD if you don’t have it already! No collection deserves to be without it.

What an amazing recording! It comes in a gorgeous collector’s edition digipak,
packed with liner notes and photographs. This is Grover in all his glory.

He plays with such splendid intensity, deep soul, funk & groove, and passion.
He’s a true genius at melody and improvisation. Superb audio quality, and a
feast of his biggest hits played live. It’s a lot of music, about 80 minutes – and
conversation. To hear the warmth of Grover’s voice makes this such a special
experience.

Close your eyes and imagine you’re in a concert hall with one of the greatest
musicians of all time, backed by his talented touring band. Then you realize
that Grover Lives On in all of us. Keep this spirit alive in the world. Turn your
friends on to the magic. A Must have album! Long live Grover Washington Jr.
in our hearts and on our stereo systems!

Thank you to his family and the producer Jason Miles for making this happen.

From Wikipedia

Al McKay (born February 2, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an
American guitarist, songwriter, producer, and former member of the
American funk band Earth, Wind & Fire. Al used to lead his own group,
Al McKay’s L.A. All Stars, with former EWF members Johnny Graham,
Fred White (younger brother of EWF founders Maurice White and
Verdine White), Rahmlee Michael Davis and Michael Harris of the
former Phenix Horns, and Andrew Woolfolk. The group released an
album entitled Al Dente through import.

Throughout most the ’70s and ’80s, Al was hired for numerous studio
sessions from different artists and produced/composed for various
projects, including The Temptations (Truly for You – 1984 / Motown),
A Taste of Honey (Ladies of the Eighties – 1982 / Capitol), Finis
Henderson (Finis – 1982 / Motown), among many others. His
instructional video for Star Licks Productions appeared on VHS in the
mid-80s. With a re-designed video sleeve, it was re-issued on VHS
during the ’90s.

He now performs with his band, The Al McKay Allstars, performing a
show called The Earth, Wind & Fire Experience, and tours along the
major jazz festivals in the world with this 14-piece ensemble. There is
also a live DVD from this project, which was filmed in Eastern Europe.

From 2012.bestival.net

Guaranteed to transform Bestival into a “Boogie Wonderland” who
better than legendary R&B disco gods Earth Wind and Fire to bring an
injection of cool to our disco extravaganza.

Built around legendary Earth Wind & Fire guitarist, Al McKay, and a
group of top Los Angeles studio and road musicians, these guys are all
about the music.

Performing hit after hit of the super group’s material, in the original
keys with the original feel, the Al McKay Allstars offer a stunning
demonstration of a living, vital performance – with every component of
the band upholding the high standard of excellence that established
the original Earth Wind and Fire sound.

by Thom Jurek All Music

When guitarist Al DiMeola left Return to Forever (again) after their
2008 reunion tour, Chick Corea solicited the help of the band’s original
axeman, Bill Connors, to rejoin the band for another tour. He did.
While he rehearsed with Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White,
health issues forbade him from returning to the road. Corea then
enlisted his former Elektric Band guitarist Frank Gambale, as well as
guest violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. The 2011 tour, by all fan accounts, blew
the doors off the 2008 reunion. Gambale, every bit the technical
virtuoso as Di Meola, is the stronger jazz player of the two. And with
Ponty’s added fireworks, the vintage RTF material took on an entirely
new life, as did other pieces performed here. This two-CD/DVD
package offers visual as well as audio proof that the fans were correct.
While the set opens with a gorgeously played “Medieval Overture”
from Romantic Warrior, it then shifts into what is perhaps the most
intense version of “Señor Mouse” on record at over 12 minutes. Next
up is a medley of White tunes in “The Shadow of Lo/Sorceress,”
clocking in at nearly 17 minutes While the first part is a largely acoustic
piece, it gives way to the band’s full slate of jazz chops full-on. Clarke,
Gambale, Ponty, and Corea all shine, while White is so ambitious and
propulsive, he makes this entire jam sound more like prog rock than
fusion. Ponty’s 19-plus minute “Renaissance,” from 1975’s Aurora, is a
showcase for his composition. As a soloist, he remains fully committed
to the fusion aesthetic and is every bit as technically gifted as he was
in the ’70s. He’s dazzling, as is Clarke, in his swinging pizzicato bass
solo. Disc two begins with a burning, free-flowing “After the Cosmic
Rain” that heads directly into an extended version of “Romantic
Warrior” before shifting gears into a gorgeous medley of composer
Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto Aranjuez paired with Corea’s “Spain.”
Things get massively funky on Clarke’s “School Days” before heading
off into a straight — and brief — “Hymn to the Seventh Galaxy” to
close it all out. It’s a breathtaking 110 minutes. The included DVD
contains a documentary called Return to Forever: Inside the Music,
concert performances of “After the Cosmic Rain” and “The Romantic
Warrior,” and a sneak peek trailer for the forthcoming film, The Story
of Return to Forever.

Maybe the tightest combo I’ve experienced in person. Sax and trombone
playing as if they were one instrument. That’s why I say their sound is
unique. The Lighthouse: a very small room; it could hold 80 people packed. I
always arrived early to sit in front. Minors could get in because they had an
Asian cooking for the musicians in the back so they skirted the law about
being a restaurant. The “Crusaders” later had to play more funky (electric
bass) stuff to keep from going broke. A great pity that so much jazz had to
be played for the love of it. This is pure jazz and there has never been
better; there never will be. This recording is more up-tempo than I’m used to
hearing them and it took me some getting used to. If you only know them
from their later stuff, you’re missing an under-appreciated unique sound. If
you know them, there’s nothing I can add.

Recorded live on December 30 & 31, 1981 in Oakland, this DVD captures Earth, Wind & Fire at their absolute peak. Despite being a group of skillful musicians, the true essence of Earth, Wind & Fire has always been the live show, with the choreography, the horns, and the massive stage show supplementing the outstanding combination of funk and R&B.

Even the most significant people in music have prime periods. The early 70’s
was such a time for James Brown. He was in between two bands at this point
but,as usual had no time to take stock. Everything from recording to
personnel changes would have to happen en route between one date to
another. Business as usual for The Godfather. At the same time James was
doing a “homecoming” show in August Georgia, the city he called home. This
was after living in New York for some time and having to deal with the
difficulties of 1968,having to be present to calm rioting after MLK’s
assassination and such. Having confronted political matters more directly
during that time it seemed the right time for the Hardest Working Man In
Show Business to begin working with what he did best: putting himself out
there on the road and allowing his music to make his most important
statements. So the concert happened. But one band had already threatened
to mutiny over payment (the Maceo/Fred Wesley JB’s lineup) and the
Bootsy/Phelps era was about to be inaugurated. Since James never did
suffer fools lightly, there were all kinds of studio tracks and live tracks
resulting from this transition. In the end, even with overdubbed applause on
some non live material, this still amounted to a series of James’ most powerful
musical statements from one of his most powerful periods.

Of course this represents JB’s funk at it’s most potent and distinctive. Much
like Duke Ellington,James had a vast catalog of songs he was already doing
and re-doing to adapt to new eras and new musics. Of course here you have
that chunky live version of the title song, where he’s still talking about where
he’s going to play next. From there it’s onto another gurgling funk machine of
“Borther Rap”. On a version of the ballad “Bewildered” he updates the lyric
slightly to reflect the women’s movement, showcases romantic
misunderstanding from the feminine end of things along with the masculine.
Of course “Give It Up Or Turn It Loose”,as with the title track gives more over
to Bootsy. You really here the rhythmic complexity growing with this
lineup, especially after Bootsy’s solo spot. “Lowdown Popcorn” takes a very
southern bluesy soul approach to instrumental funk. Somewhat a modern
variation on his earlier instrumentals. On his version of “Spinning Wheel” he
draws the jazzy nature of the original into a bluesier funk attitude, the core of
the songs melodic concept than the instrumentation. Interestingly enough he
does the same with his first hit “Please Please Please”,giving it that funk
oriented guitar flavor here away from it’s soul ballad context.

If I remember correctly, the writer Ricky Vincent once coined a phrase that
James Brown and his bands were playing “jazz with a raw rhythm attitude”.
And at one point here Catfish Collins I believe not to “play jazz”. He knew
where his music came from. But at the same time he was looking to make sure
nothing got in the way of the emphasis his music, which was funk, had on
rhythm. Another thing to be noted here is the relatively easy going contrasts
between the band transitions. Obviously that “jazz with raw rhythm”
approach is more evident with the heavily horn based Maceo/Fred Wesley
sound. And it’s heard in every solo, break and call and response vocal turn.
With the Bootsy era group,on tracks recorded live in Cincinatti, the horn
section was pared down a little bit. And the approach somewhat more spare.
But the manner in which these potentially contrasting sets of musicians are
presented here, basically from funk to soul ballad and back again, had the
effect of the whole process having more fluidity than it probably really had.
As it stands this represents James taking lemons and making lemonade
approach to music that he always had. Didn’t always have the best studios or
the most convenient time frames to record. But even if so,his live albums
were always so much more telling to his character. That may be why
sometimes, even though some of these tracks are “faux live”,he presents
them as such anyway because his “keep it live” mentality was a central part
of what it meant to be James Brown.

Live at P.J.’s, the third Kool & the Gang record (and second live album in a
row), betters the previous Live at the Sex Machine with a committed set
balancing funky workouts (“Ronnie’s Groove”) with more exploratory soul-jazz
(“Sombrero Sam”), and occasionally trying both on the same track (“N.T.”). A
night-after-night schedule of concerts all over the country had given Kool &
the Gang the chops to become one of the best bands of the ’70s, but it also
enabled them to construct tight, interesting sets (this release would’ve
undoubtedly sounded even better had the original compilers trusted the
artists themselves and reissued the show in the correct running order). The
opener is a version of “N.T.” (short for no title), oddly slower than it was
heard on record, though the relaxed tempo allowed plenty of room for solos
and stretching out. At this point, Kool & the Gang had more in common with
soul-jazz units like the Crusaders than a funk band, giving nearly every
member a chance to shine, but especially Dennis Thomas on flute (he has
some great vocalizing on “Sombrero Sam”), Khalis Bayyan on tenor and
soprano sax, and Robert “Spike” Mickens on trumpet. The only misstep is a
pair of covers originally heard on Isaac Hayes’ …To Be Continued, the first a
regal version of “Ike’s Mood” that suddenly descends into MOR soul via a
misguided attempt at “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.” Mercury’s CD reissue
added a great bonus track, “The Penguin.”

War Live — also sometimes known simply as Live — was recorded just as the
group was achieving a peak of popularity and virtuosity, and released 16
months later, amid a string of highly successful studio LPs. It was
underappreciated at the time, and only on CD has it found its proper
audience. Recorded at one late November show at the High Chaparral in
Chicago, the group had been engaged earlier the same year in a national
tour as the opening act for Isaac Hayes and was reportedly so good that
Hayes kept cutting back the length of their opening set. The tapes from this
show have held up extremely well across the decades, with rich fidelity and a
close sound. The live renditions of “The Cisco Kid” and other such songs may
not supplant the studio originals, but the 20-minute “Get Down” is worth
hearing.

Tower Of Power Live In Concert @ Ohne Filter 1998   6 comments

Tower Of Power Live In Concert

Performing a subtle mix of soul jazz and rock is Tower of Power’s forte, and this live concert captures them in their element. Recorded in Germany, on July 1st 1998, check out these talented Californian’s on this stunning live video.

Maaaaan…this is the funkiest white boy group since Charlie Manson went Helter Skelter up and down the Cali Coast! The band is tighter than a pair of James Brown’s shark skins. Mo funky than a Louisiana slaughter house in the dead of Summer…with no AC! If you don’t groove to this hour long funk fest then you got a hole in your Soul!
